Question Windows 10 random freeze/hang-ups

I have a Windows 10, i5 4690k, 16 gigs of ram, GTX 1080 card, and I am getting random straight up crashes. Sometimes after the PC reboots, and I hit the power button to turn it back on, I hear the fans kick on but nothing happens, no BIOS, nothing...

Been awhile since I have had to troubleshoot an issue such as this and I am not sure where to start... I have done a memtest and everything there checks out.

Any help would be amazing!!

Are you overclocking? If so, reset to default, and see if you still have the issue.

Yes, but nothing absurd, but I turned off the overclock, and it is still crashing. Oddly enough it really only seems to crash when I am in Kodi or in chrome, but I need to do more testing. Leaving it logged in on the windows screen, it does not seem to reboot... Will have to do more monitoring....

The PSU I believe is a thermike 1400 or something... I will have to open the case to really look into it, its overkill I know, but I had it lying around, but really its only been on this PC and the computer for about 2 to 2.5 years old, but is maybe from 2013 but has not even been on most the time. Hmm, I don't think the issue is related to waking from sleep, was that the BIOS setting you saved? Did you see temperatures rising on the CPU? Did you repaste the CPU?

Oddly enough it really only seems to crash when I am in Kodi or in chrome.

This (if really so) can indicate creation of Hi Heat when the software mentioned above running. Then if you immediadly press the Power on after crash it will not start.

Let it cool after crash and see what then occurs.

may be you should install one of the Temrature following App ans see what it show while the computer is used.

I'm guessing, that's either a ThermalTake TR2-400, or some 1400W model of theirs. If it's a 1400W model, then it shouldn't be doing that.

As for the aging factor, I'm really not sure how an ATX PSU with typical components and caps, "ages", while just in the box. I have a personal question about that, too. because in my prior main rig's incarnation, it had an Antec Neo Eco 620(C?), which was supposed to be a "good" PSU, made by SeaSonic, but it had sat in the box, unopened, for a bunch of years. So it because suspect, when my main rig "ate" / "burned out" two PCI-E video cards. (One, a Sapphire Nitro RX 460 4GB card, an early RX card, but a supposedly well-built one, and it never was excessive in terms of temps or power draw, although I did mine on it. The second was a generic NVidia Chinese card, which died in like a day or two. Unsurprising? Probably.)

I do know that most "average" PSUs last 3-5 years under continuous usage, more or less. Better PSUs with Japanese caps can last 10-12 years, or at least I trust them as long as their warranty is for.

I just the other day, replaced an "EVGA 600W" PSU, yeah, that one, the $30 BestBuy ebay special one that they run every once in a while. It was powering a ~3.8Ghz i5-6400 (OCed slightly) rig, 16GB DDR4, and an RX 470 4GB card, nothing seriously major, no two video cards or anything. It didn't even last two years.

So I was thinking that as the first thing to check myself. I got a new tier 1 PSU off newegg, and same issue, crashes when web browsing and when using Kodi...

Nothing really relevant in the Windows logs....

I tried to use some HW monitoring software but could not find anything that would log during the crash, to see what the temps are at.....

I do have water on the CPU though, and when I was monitoring the temps, nothing jumped out, but its hard to see what happens during a crash as its pretty much instant.

Corsair RMX 650, and nope, I was hoping it would.... Looked good for about 10 minutes then started happening again....

I mean I agreed with you guys, and PSU was really what I was thinking was the cause. I guess I need to figure out how to log my CPU temp during the crash....

Also, I know its not the GPU, I had a 1070 in this one, then traded it out for at 1080 and same issue on both of them..

Anything else I might look into?

At this point the only thing that I can relate to is what I would do if I have such a problem that was not solved in 9 days.

Get a new SSD. Take the current SSD out (and store safely), clean install Win 10 (no worry about Activation if it is the same version of Win 10 it will Auto activate itself).

Install Start use the computer without the Codi or whatever seem to be involved with the Crashes and take it from there.

Or you can Clone the current HD/SSD and keep the clone on the side, then start UnIntslling and cleaning the software that seem to be involved in the crashes and see where or when the crahes stop.

Hmm I do have a 120 gig SD laying around collecting dust, maybe I should do a clean install on that and see what happens....

Does anyone have any clue of software I can run that will log any type of critical software/issues that could be causing the crash?

So that program appears to be for applications, I am getting a total system crash here... I rebooted and tried running the program and nothing would work. I need something that will log the crash as it happens... I am going to mess with my bios and see if I can get the BSOD to appear....

Will any of these programs work if the PC is totally hung? I had automatic reboot turned on, and just turned it off, now I am seeing the PC totally hang up when this happens, On a reboot I am not getting any dump files created. Also I am trying to find some temp monitoring software that will write to a log continuously so I can see the temps when the crash occurs.

The crash again seems to be caused by a chrome/firefox and kodi, seems to be pretty stable just under the desktop, and have ran prime95 multiple times and that does not seem to create a crash, any other stress testing software I can try here also while I am tshooting it?

What are you plugging the machine into - power strip? Battery backup? Wall outlet? For testing purposes - I would plug it directly into the wall and see what happens.

Also - are a lot of your crashes happening at the Windows login screen?

I supposed I can run checkdisk, but I dont have alot of faith that is going to fix the issue, but it cannot hurt

Right now the machine is plugged into the wall outlet, the crashes really only seem to come from kodi/Chrome/Firefox, but it could be other applications, about the only other thing I have on it is my games and Launchbox, but it being a lemon right now, there have been no point in trying to get a game going, but I might need to do other testing here....

The PC will boot fine after waiting afew minutes or so, usually the only time it hangs on the boot is when I have had like 3 or 4 crashes in arow, then it will not boot for afew minutes, I let it sit and then it will boot up fine. But when I get boot hanging, it will load the BIOS flash page, then go into a blank/black screen... So there is that...

so if chkdsk finds an error thats usually a good fix as soon as your pc boots you can use the task manager and disable everything that loading on startup as see if that helps every time I fix a pc it can take a lot of time and patience on a lot of fixes.

did you say you were able to boot it in safe mode?

also disable the automatic restart setting as it might get your system to stop on a helpful ms info screen?

The PC will boot fine, but sometimes it will freeze after BIOS, not sure what is up with that... I am going to run chkdsk in alittle to see if that might help at all. I also did disable the auto restart feature, and this is where I can now see the PC getting hung/freeze. I am not getting any BSOD, and its not creating and dump logs on these crashes, but its just freezing up when... I am not sure how I can record these freezes for log analysis though....
