I have a Windows 10, i5 4690k, 16 gigs of ram, GTX 1080 card, and I am getting random straight up crashes. Sometimes after the PC reboots, and I hit the power button to turn it back on, I hear the fans kick on but nothing happens, no BIOS, nothing...

Been awhile since I have had to troubleshoot an issue such as this and I am not sure where to start... I have done a memtest and everything there checks out.

Any help would be amazing!!

Cheers.

Yes I updated that this weekend, also, made no diffrence...

Ran sfc /scannow, nothing wrong there....

Right now I can just go into firefox, load up a youtube video and within 15 minutes the PC will totally hang. Nothing really meaningful in the windows event log and zero dump files are created on a reboot. Going to try to figure out how to run a memtest for at least 12 hours and see if I get some errors...

If bumping RAM voltage doesn't help, the waiting and getting a good boot tells me something. First would be power supply. But since that doesn't seem to be it, I am wondering if the motherboard is at fault here. Generally a computer doesn't go to a straight power reset unless there is a power delivery issue somewhere (even a memory issue usually gives you a blue screen, at least some of the time).

What version of memtest did you use, and did you check the SMART of the ssd (what model is it)? Sorry if I missed this if it was already said.

I would try a recent version of UEFI memtest free from passmark, version 7.5 or higher.

Based on the crash report you posted, try going to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys or the drive letter for whichever drive your OS is on. If you have not checked view hidden items already, do it, so you can see the prog data folder. If you see a local service there under machine keys, change the permissions to modify, read, and write. If full control is checked turn it off.

I have ran about 15 passes with memtest86, but can only run 4 passes a run... No errors on any of those.. I have a Crucial MX300 SSD on the PC as my primary HD...

The mobo is a Asrock Fa1taly Z97, at this point I am thinking its my motherboard but replacements boards for 1150 are expensive, and would prefer not to buy one until I can confirm that is indeed the issue.

@VirtualLarry, sounds good if I can verifiy that to be the issue!

@DAPUNISHER
I only see a single file in here, system file, looks like a long key string..
I do have all files turned on in folder options, the file permissions are set to all for everyone...

I am not sure if that error you are talking about is causing the hang or not, I dont think so, but I would like to identify where those are coming from, and at least try to eliminate the authentication attempts.

The symptoms sound similar to those caused by an unstable overclock. Did you try raising the Vcore a little at a time and also the ram voltage?

I have reset my BIOS, so no overclock... But I did find something intresting... I took off my 1080, and now it has been stable for over 24 hours, not a single hang...

The question I have, is if its NVIDA drivers for the 1080/1070 card, shouldnt I get some error logs and a blue screen of death, with say IRQ errors, instead of a hang/freeze?

Generally yes. But don't discard the amount of power a card like that can pull (at least it's not a power-hungry AMD card. One other thing to try is putting your video card in the other Pci-Express slot and see if that makes a difference.

Go to the Admin Tools, event viewer , at the top of the list you see administrative tool check the Administrative Events and look at the errors and post anything might be causing your crash.!

It could take awhile to figure out what the problem or you might get lucky and see something helpful right away.

Good Luck.

So after running on the IGP, then moving the 1080 to the second PCI-E slot, it appears the crashes are not happening. Still monitoring the PC, but everything has been stable for afew days now.

Right now I think the first PCI-express slot was bad, will update if crashes start happening again...

Cheers for all the help so far!!!
