Windows 10 to SSD.

So I'm finishing up my first PC build and I just have one last thing to do. I have a 120 gb HyperX Fury SSD and a 2 tb WD Enterprise HDD. I obviously want to put my Windows 10 from the thumb-drive from the kit onto the SSD and use the HDD for everything else. How do I go about doing this? I've been trying to figure it out from websites and Youtube videos but I'm still not understanding it enough to be 100% confident with myself. Please help!

Disconnect the Enterprise drive and install Windows on the ssd. Then hook up the Enterprise. Windows will assign it a drive letter.

YOu can also leave the HDD installed. When you boot the USB stick, you will ahve a choice of drives to install to. Pick the SSD. It should be quite clear which drive is which.

And THIS is what you should not do!
Windows tends to put the Master Boot Record on "any available" drive. If it puts the MBR on your HDD and you will ever remove it, you have to rebuild the MBR on the SSD in order to be able to boot from the SSD without the HDD installed/connected.
There is a reason, why so many recommend to disonnect any other drives when installing windows on a SSD.

Yep, I got bit by that once, and now will never install Windows with more than just the boot drive connected.

This sounds like something it would do with win XP and earlier. It still randomly puts the MBR on any drive on Win10??

Admittedly with UEFI I would have thought that it is less likely to occur (ie. I would have thought that aspects of partition and bootblock writing would be reviewed in the context of security), but strictly speaking I don't see why MS might think that the behaviour we're used to is a problem that needs addressing.

I wonder if anyone has ever seen the other partitions that =>Win7 creates (e.g. the hidden 100MB boot partition) go onto other storage devices.

I had windows 7 installed on a Samsung HDD , plugged in a Sandisk ULTRA II SSD followed by installing windows 10 on it , and like usual it does something great like automatically putting itself in the windows 7 bootloader but then off course instead of keeping it simple made a mess of it by putting everything of windows 10 bootloader on the HDD instead of the SSD so when i remove the HDD , the SSD does not boot.

This is typical Windows behaviour instead of just letting you set the order in the bios or simple adding a other boot location ,Microsoft always uses some weird logic.

So yes , unplugging other HDD with or without a other OS and leaving the install SSD plugged in still gives you the cleanest solution. If you haven't you can always fix it afterwards.

I've also seen windows installations fail just because you have more than one drive connected. It's not the most reliable piece of software they've put out.

When in doubt, just have one disk plugged in and install from USB.
