The question is "is the internet going to die when they release it?"

If every copy of win 7, 8 and 8.1 starts downloading several gigs of data it could get interesting!

did anybody get windows 10 upgrade?

I think you can currently (ONLY) get preview versions. Which is why some people, have already got it, and posted about it, here.

The question is "is the internet going to die when they release it?"

If every copy of win 7, 8 and 8.1 starts downloading several gigs of data it could get interesting!

Any chance they plan to use P2P (i.e. bit torrent like) techniques, to solve that problem ?

Reading the offer from the taskbar, I believe it says it will fully download long before the install prompt appears (days).

my question is if your win7 is working perfectly fine why would anyone risk mucking it up even if it's free. What is the catch with the free upgrade?

I believe that is why there is a reserve win10 icon. There will be a queue to download it.

Microsoft said they're rolling it out over several days. So not everybody is getting it on the 29th. Probably enterprise customers and people in the Insider program will get it first.

Another reason I said "Light years", was because they are (currently) an IMPOSSIBLE unit of length. (As regards humans, getting to stuff 1000's of light years away).

E.g. If something is 1000 Light years away. Even at the speed of light, we would NOT get there in our lifetimes.
Especially if it is true that you can't exceed the speed of light. (Generally believed to be true, by most scientists).

EDIT: CORRECTION:
If we could travel at close to the speed of light, time would pass very slowly for us (if I remember Einsteins laws correctly), so maybe we could do it.

I'm worried about the FORCED opt in, as regards windows updates.

E.g. I've had to spend about 30 minutes, removing the "forced" windows 10 icon thing.

On Win10, I won't even have the option, to NOT receive the Windows 11 one, etc etc.

I have NOT liked some of the xbox updates. Especially the adverts on the front pages, of the user interface.

I'm worried that Windows 10, at some point, will do something similar, and I will have no way of removing/disabling/refusing the horrible adverts.

Don't get me going about worries about horrible monthly subscription fees, for future Microsoft stuff (SPECULATION, but already talked about for Microsoft Office).

tl;dr
Over a period of years, monthly subscriptions can easily cost WAY more than just paying a one off fee.

$49.99 is much less than $6.99 x 12 Months x 4 years = $335.52 Yikes!

EDIT:
Some of Microsofts Win10 Preview decisions, defy belief, in my opinion.

Such as forcing a keystroke logging program, into the operating system, which you have NO choice in the matter about. Supposedly, just in the preview versions.

To me Keystroke Loggers = Highly Undesirable Software.

tl;dr
The last thing I want, is a built in keystroke logger. For (hopefully) obvious reasons. They had better remove it, for Win10 release.

It was a good word for the question. My first response was to laugh.

If you are part of the insider program, some of us already have a version that is not listed as a preview. It is debatable what exactly that means, but I think/hope the final has a few more tweaks.

But since we are not at the release date, no one has had the final version/ free upgrade yet.

For people that are already running Build 10240 (circa 10 days ago), it probably will be more like an update then complete install.

I was running a preview build (dual boot with windows 7) and just got upgraded to final build I think. No watermark on desktop and properties shows window version as "Windows Pro 10" (previously showed "Windows Technical Preview".)

Will this give you the option to download a full install ISO? There's no way I'd want to actually run an upgrade process, that usually leaves a lot of crap behind from the previous installation and you can run into all sorts of issues with programs and such. Also becomes a support nightmare as the minute you have an issue with something the first thing people are going to ask is "is it a clean install or an upgrade?" as it will be a potential point to blame for an issue.

I have not turned on my win7 machine in a while I should probably check if I get this notification too. I would rather install it in a VM to play around with it before I decide to actually use it though. Chances are I'll stick with 7 for now since it works for my games and it's all I use that machine for.

To get the free version, you must upgrade a qualified OS. Thereafter you can do a reset or clean install.

Don't worry, it is well established that I am NOT too fond of Microsoft (Micro$oft)). If you want an unbiased, favorable view of Microsoft, it might be best to ask someone else.

I'm waiting to see what Win10 is like, before jumping in with both feet.

Some of their releases, e.g. XP, have been pretty good overall, but on the other hand, e.g. Vista (especially in the early days), were NOT.

I'm still not clear if Windows10 is going to be a worthwhile upgrade ?

Or if I/we should be buying up any remaining copies of Windows7 (legitimate), before it is withdrawn from sale (presumably), at some point.

My sarcasm detector must not have been plugged in. :whiste:

I've now realized I could/should have given a smarties pants reply.

I can use light years, because we are talking about a queue.

So assuming that a defined length, for example 1 meter, is allocated to each person in the queue.
The total distance/size of the queue (1 Meter x Number of people in the queue), could be converted to light years.

I.e. imagine a real life queue of people, waiting for something, and you are standing in it.

I could give you your position, as a length (between yourself and the shop counter) AND as an estimated time, when you will get to the shop counter, to buy the item(s) you have queued up for.

N.B. This reply is just stating some possible amusing facts, and does NOT represent a serious reply. Light Years was WRONG.

They will stagger the release. They have already said this, so it will likely be over several days.
