Windows 2000 and UltraATA 100

Hi

I'm trying to get my IBM 45gig UltraATA100 to work with the Promise UltraATA 100 controller built in to the Asus A7V running with Win 2K. I can see the device under the promise boot screen, but Windows 2000 will not recognize the drive as a bootable (It said can't detect a hard drive when I was installing win 2K from the CD and the HD attached to the UltraATA100 when I was initially installed, so I switched the drive over to the normal IDE controller, but now I want to switch to UltraATA 100), only when the drive is attached to the normal IDE controller will it work. How do I get all this working? I also checked the right settings in the BIOS, but if anyone could tell me their settings that would be helpful as well. One thing that is strange is in the mobo manual I can see a "Onboard ATA device First" setting under Advanced > PCI Settings, but in my actual BIOS, this feature is not there, so this might be it, but I'm not sure.

I had a similar problem. The "problem" is that W2K doesn't natively support the Promise ATA100 controller. So when you boot/install W2k initially, it actually doesn't see the drive.

All you have to do is download the latest promise drivers. Copy them to a floppy disk, and then when you boot from the W2K CD, press F6 (I think) to load 3rd party drivers. Put the floppy in the drive and let W2K do the rest. It will find the drivers and all will be well.

The other alternative would be to install W2K from the standard IDE controller. Then install the drivers for the Promise ATA100 card, then switch the drive over to the Promise controller.
