*sigh* <--- a bad sign, neh?

I am in need of help from someone who understands the way the permissions system works under Windows 2000. I need instructions(trouble-shooting help) in getting Yahoo Messenger 6.0 to work under Windows 2000's "Restricted User (Users group)" account.

Here's the general setup:

Administrator account, Yahoo Messenger installed under admin account, a "Restricted User" account, and our HTTP proxy/firewall, 10.10.10.1:3128.

Yahoo messenger is installed and connects without issue under the administrator account once the proxy settings are entered. The problem occurs once I switch over to the "Restricted User" account, once more enter the proxy settings for Yahoo Messenger and try to connect. So far, I have not succeeded in connecting to Yahoo Messenger under the "Restricted User" account.

So, please help, if you can. If not, please rope someone who can into replying.

Hope everyone is enjoying the season, whatever season you celebrate. My connectivity over the next few days might be iffy thus my replies to follow-up question might not be prompt. Please forgive me in advance.

CHEERS~!

PS. Some working stats to start the trouble-shoot: Windows 2000 SP4, with Internet Explorer 6.0 for a side-kick.

Just a first shot in the dark: find the C:\Program Files\Yahoo Messenger folder or whatever it's called, and give RU's and PU's full-control permissions, or at least write permissions, to any obvious-looking .ini file in there.

Or try elevating the RU account to Admin level temporarily, run YM, then close it, and then drop the account back to RU and see if it keeps on working.

I have the solution. To mechBgon and Dopefiend, thanks for your suggested solution. Though it wasn't the final answer, trying it your way lead me to the "right" way.

Here's how I did it--get Yahoo Messenger to work under a "Restricted User" account on a Windows 2000 system.

1) Installed Yahoo Messenger under "admin" account
2) Located the "Yahoo" or "Yahoo Messenger" installation folder in Program Files (or alternate install location)
3) Opened up properties of the folder (right click on folder -> properties)
4) Select the security tab
5) Select the "restricted user" or the user group for which you want to set permissions
6) Then select the permissions you wish to give in the lower "pane" (in my case I selected the first option, "complete control")
7) IMPORTANT STEP: Click on the "Advanced" button
8) Check the option "Reinitialise permissions for the all objects and propagate the permissions that can be inherited" (paraphrased)
9) Click through the OK's

This worked for me. Worked on all the Windows 2000 systems I've used it on. Now, I need help to figure out how to do equivalent in XP. Help, please!

Turn off Simple File Sharing in XP Pro, or start the system in Safe Mode for XP Home (or Pro), and you'll be able to do the same there. Did you try Modify permissions before trying Full Control? because elevating the privilege level higher than required might not be a great idea for the home directory of an IM proggie.

Once again, much thanks mechBgon. To answer your question, no I did not try to modify the permissions first before giving full control. The initial desire was just to get the darned this working.

This should wrap up this thread then, unless I run into something unexpected while "fixing" the XP Home systems. Thanks again.
