windows 2000 connection problems solved thanks everyone!!!

I have a windows 2000 pro install on my kids computer. I cannot get it connect to the internet. I have pulled the nic card and tried it in another pc and it works. I have tried the cable on my laptop and it works. I am assuming I am overlooking something very obvious but i cant figure out what it is. I cannot even ping the router. any help is appreciated.

i am connecting through a belkin router, motorola surfboard cable modem. I have tried using IE and firefox.

So is this a new setup or a setup that was working and now you've upgraded?

do you have a link/activity light where the cable plugs into the nic - are they on?

can you ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1) and the ip address of the windows 2000 machine? (assuming you're using static addresses or are you using DHCP? and failing to get an address)

have you got the router IP setup as a gateway?

how many machines are connecting, are you using wireless?

well the pc is new to the network. and yes i see lights blinking temporarily when i try to connect. the loopback address ping fine. The pc does have an ip . there are currently 3 pc connected to the router. no wireless connections. as far as having the router IP set up as the gateway I didnt configure anything. not sure of how to do that

with belkin, i think you have to type
192.168.2.1 [as the default ip address given to router]
in the address bar of your chosen browser.

what happens if you do this?

i get nothing when i try to connect to the router. i get a page cannot be displayed. i tried bith IE and Firefox

On the non-working machine, do an "ipconfig /renew" at the command prompt, while plugged into the router.

Still no worky?
Then do an "ipconfig /all" (from the command prompt) from a working PC and also from your non-working PC

How do the IP, subnet-mask and default-gateway compare? (List them here)

nonworking pc
ip 192.168.2.5
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.2.1

The same is true from this pc exect the ip address is different
192.168.2.28

one difference i just noticed is on the non working pc the node type is broadcast.

What happens if you do a "ping 192.168.2.1" from the command prompt?

can you ping 192.168.2.1?

open a command window (start button, select run and in the box type cmd.exe)
and try ping www.anandtech.com

what messages are displayed?

i can ping those two ip addresses now. I havent been able to previously. i cannot ping www.anandtech.com

that's a bad example.... www.anandtech.com doesn't respond to pings.....
How about "ping www.yahoo.com" -- or firing up IE and seeing if stuff works now (maybe the /renew fixed your problem)

could this possibly be a bad win install. it doesnt seem like it to me but i just installe dthe os 2 days ago and havent beeh able to connect yet.

i have tried to see if IE work and now it get to website found but never opens teh page, just sits there and hangs forever

ok,
i had a problem with a new belkin router.

Ring up their support line, i rung, freephone,
started off with their teaboy, who knew his stuff, no go.
got passed on to the window cleaner, who was also pretty nifty,
then on to someone who was a techie, no luck,
then,
to the head tech,
within 2 minutes, he cracked the problem....

was on the phone for 1 1/2 hours - and at no point did they go, 'sorry, can't fix it, bye'
they were brilliant.

unfortunately, this was some time ago, and before i knew anything about netorking.
i am still trying to figure out what he told me to do to get the stuff working!!! dammit

well i guess i can call them up I never thought of going that route, especially since everyone here is so knowledgable. I than everone for there help and after i call them and get this figured out i will post back. Again thanks everyone

i just tried to ping www.yahoo.com and it ping 3 of the four times. but when i type it into IE nothing happens. i dont really have anything on this pc so i guess i will try a format and install and see if that helps.

well reformatted and reinstalled windows. still have the same issue.

You might try changing the nic speed from 100Mbps to 10Mbps half duplex and give that a try.

Try changing to one of the other ports on the router - one that hasn't had any problems.

After you swap the ports, be sure to do a "ipconfig /renew"
