Hey, can 98/95 machines log on to an NT/2k domain?

No, Win95/98 machines do not authenticate to domain controllers.

However, *users* on these computers can gain access to domain resources by having a user account in the domain.

Can't Win 98/95 machines connect to a domain by using the Microsoft Network logon option in Notwork Places as it does give an option to log into a domain. I think anyway.

Well right now I have a bunch of comps (running everything from 95 to 2k pro) and I want to run a Windows 2000 Server and so people can logon and get a home drive, and have there settings the same no matter what comp. I can do that, but I don't want to have to upgrade the slow Windows 95 machines to NT Workstation. So I think I mean both a domain and active directiory.

In an NT/W2K domain model, a computer actually exists as an object in the security accounts database, and the computer itself actually authenticates to the domain controller, even when nobody is logged on.

With Win9x clients, the *user* of the client computer authenticates to the domain for access to resources.

To answer what you probably intended to ask, yes, users on 98/95 machines can log on to an NT/W2K domain.

But having win 98 clients on your domain would greatly decrease the security on your network.....
