I have a new system (see sig.) which I have installed windows 2000 Professional on. I knew that I would need a Service Pack to access the rest of the HDD, so I downloaded (over dial-up ) and installed SP4. But I can still only access 137GB of my hard disk. I tried using Patrition magic Pro (version 7 i think) to look at the rest of the drive, but no luck. It also only sees 137GB. The drive is a WD Caviar 200GB SATA (7200rpm/8MB cache).

Anyone have any ideas what to do, or should I just go and buy (shudder) XP Pro. I was going to wait for Longhorn, but if i need to get myself a copy of XP, I can get it cheap through Uni, so Im not too stressed, I just dont want to buy XP if there's an easy work around to fix 2K.

Thanks All

Slipstream SP4 into your install media, and install again.
msfn.org can tell you how to do that.
XP Pro requires SP1 integrated in it (use SP2 nowadays, naturally) to do the same result; msfn.org will tell you about that, too.

have you tried the HD on another system and/or with another OS? How many gigs do you that way?

Thanks dclive.
just one question: what is slipstream?

QD- No, I havent tried it on another computer, but I googled it and this is a common problem. And according to microsoft, all you need to do is install SP4. But I did, and i still have the problem.

thanks guys

Slipstreaming is pretty much a fancy way of updating the install files before you install them onto the CD, search google for it, you'll come up with plenty of tutorials.

Well since it only partitioned it as 137Gb, you'd have to use a utility after your SP4 install to resize the partition or reinstall using a SP4 Slimstreamed CD(While re-partitioning).

Big drive enabler.

Maxtor's Big Drive Enabler is a one step executable that enables support for drives larger than 137 Gigabytes in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and XP Service Pack 1. This utility takes the guess work out of editing the Windows registry. The Big Drive Enabler fixes an operating system limitation. This utility is needed anytime a Hard Disk Drive larger than 137 GB is connected to the motherboard's ATA bus, regardless of any system BIOS that supports 48-bit LBA.

download the util and run if you got sp3 or better, btw you dont need to have a maxtor drive.

Budman.
Thanks for that. Just a Question: It says for any ATA drive...does that include serial-ATA (SATA?).

Thanks all

Just went thru this last week. Purchased a Dell SC420, installed Windows 2000 Server, installed SP4 and tested everything - looked OK but then added a second 250GB SATA HD, and it was seen as 124GB or something like that, and I could not figure out why. Talked to Dell who said first make sure your BIOS recognizes the HD correctly (make sure it is set for Auto) - it did- next make registry changes as per MS KB article 305098

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: EnableBigLba
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 0x1 (means change from 0 to 1)
4. Quit Registry Editor.

If you have a new PC and have SP3 or later installed this probably what you need to do.

Value data: 0x1 (means change from 0 to 1)

0x1 does not mean change from 0 to 1, 0x is a sign of a HEX number, 0x1 = 1 0xF = 15

Thanks for the link to the Maxtor program Budman. I downloaded it, ran it, restarted, and now I can see all 200GB of my Drive.

Thanks Everyone.
