Hello,

I just finished a clean install, dual boot 98/Win2K and I'm having some trouble with the Win2K side.

My Win2K system is locking up (no BSOD or error message, just complete freeze requiring cold boot). This has happened twice while surfing (over 8-10 hour period) and every time I run 3DMark, usually in the high resolution portion of the test, parts 3 or 6).

My Win98 system seems solid; no probs running 3DMark.

I am using Det6.26 for the 98 and the Herc supplie 5.30 for Win2K (I am under the impression the 6.26 is not for Win2K???).

The ASPI or plug n play board has put all my cards on IRQ 9 on Win 2K.

Are either the IRQ settings or the Det5.30 causing this problem? Anything else possible?

Here are my specs:
Hardware:
ASUS A7V 1.02
(edit) Tbird 800 (not overclocked)
FOP32-1 heatsink (system runs around 40C/104F).
Herc GeForce2 MX OEM 7ns
Win2K on 20 gig 5400RPM Maxtor (master)
Win98 on 8 gig drive (slave)
Plextor 12/10/32 Master on Sec IDE
CD 44X Slave on Sec IDE.
Firewire Card (drivers loaded but no apps software)
(no drives currently on the ATA 100 IDE)
Generic PC100 memory (but not causing probs in Win 98).

Software loaded before noticing problem:
Ultraplayer (music player)
Download Accelerator
Adobe ActiveShare
WinZip
Adaptec CDRW Softare
Adobe Acrobat
Lexmark Printer Software

Thanks for any advice

sounds like an overclocking issuse as well. What cpu you running and are you overclocking it? Sounds like it might be getting too hot. Also my system will do this when i try to oc my video card as well.

Also 3dmark doesn't have full support for w2k yet so it tends to lock up.

Have you dl'ed and installed SP1? It fixes alot of the d3d problems. And I've got ACPI enabled in my W2K install, with all perifs. on one IRQ---haven't had any problems. I'm using NTFS though, instead of FAT 32.

I have a T-Bird 800, not overclocked yet. I have a FOP32-1 heat sink and blow-holes in my case; system usually runs around 40C/104F, so I don't think it is a heat issue (also because the problem does not occur in Win98 while running 3DMark or when playing games).

I have not downloaded SP1; I was afraid because I have heard some horror stories. I guess since I already have probs I should take the plunge? I have heard SP1 has probs with Maxtor drives, can anybody confirm this?

What about a different video driver than 5.30; any recommendations?

Thanks,
Brian

I have had abosulty no problems with SP1, seems to run games a little more smoothly, I would try that first.

Friend -

I too have been running into similar problems with
W2K.

T-Bird 900
128mb Corsair
TNT Ultra 2/32mb AGP
SB Live! Value
3c905B-TX 3Com 10/100
Abit KT7-RAID

Upon investigation (spent lots of time in Device Manager),
I found that :

1. My computer was specified as ACPI System
2. All of my PCI/USB devices were on IRQ 11

I would check to see if all your hardware is on the
same IRQ, or if your graphics or sound is sharing an IRQ.

The SB Live! series are notorious IRQ hogs and don't like
sharing.

If this is the case, and you can't change the IRQ of the
cards individually (like I couldn't), then you have to
change your computer type. This is some drastic stuff.

I had to change the computer type from ACPI Compliant to
Standard PC. After doing this, the system rebooted, all of
my hardware was redetected, and now I can turn off PCI Steering,
which was causing everything to be on the same IRQ in the
first place.

Check out
this link.

It will show you how to do this all step by step, not to
mention the fact that this website is an amazing resource.

Good luck, and if this doesn't help, we'll figure something
else out.

Volitive,

Thanks for the info. I've already been there...

I also had ACPI force IRQ sharing (IRQ 9 in my case). I set my IRQ's in Bios and did a complete reinstall of 98 and Win2K. During the Win2k install I hit F7 at a certain point to force the installation into Standard PC type. Instructions at:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q237/5/56.asp

Now my Video Card is on IRQ 11 and is not sharing. My Slot 1 is open (it shares IRQ with AGP slot. My sound card is in slot 3 and set to IRQ4 (I turned off the serial port) and is happy.

The primary reason the computer crashed running 3DMark is described and fixed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q270/7/15.asp

I have not had a crash since implementing these two fixes :>)

Thanks,
Brian

Great. Now, I must thank you - I was going to
actually reinstall Win2K myself, and hack some
files to get the Standard PC setting instead of
ACPI compliant.

F7 + F5 during reinstall sounds a lot easier. (c:
