I have been running Windows 2000 for several months, with a cable modem, Zone Alarm, etc. Sat, I downloaded a couple of price sheets from a distributor (XLS format) and also installed CD GHOST, which is a virtual cd program that comes with an ECS motherboard I had. After I rebooted I can not access add/remove programs, any of the administrator tools, , and Zone alarm doesnt load at startup.
upon booting I got this message a couple of times,
Could not load the target dll C:\program files\backwebackweb client\6.0.0.157L\program\backweb.dll
other probrams that will not execute are Internet explorer, almost EVERYTHING in the control panel

Oddly Norton Antivirus corporate version runs on startup, and Netscape and Eudora work

I wonder if I have a trojan, or, ?

Go to Add/Remove Programs and see if you find anything there. The closest thing I could find to your error message is Backweb.com.

Boot into safe mode and try Add/Remove programs.

Backweb is a nifty little program that some trojans use to "control" your computer. If you didn't install SP2 for windows 2000, you have most likely been infected. SP2 corrected alot of the insecurities with win2000.

I would suggest a format and reinstall. Especially since it seems that you have lost most of your administrative control.

thanks, I didnt think about booting into safe mode (probably because the computer never boots up to the safe mode since installing Windows 2000.
it has been very stable unlike 95/98.
problem appears to be solved, although I don't know why I got that message about backweb.dll
