Anybody running SP4 on an Intel 440BX-based machine? If so, any problems with shutdowns? i.e. long delays of 2-3 minutes?

I have two newer machines running SP4 without any problems (shutdowns are actually FASTER than SP3).

I haven't attempted to upgrade my Thinkpad T21 (PIII-800) yet because SP4 includes hotfix 329170 which caused shutdown delays of 2 minutes on this machine which I did not care for...

Actually, that is one of the things that SP4 fixes. The problem was in the print spooler code leaving a open registry key, and so it would take a long time while it keeps retrying to close said key. Of course, you could also do "NET STOP SPOOLER" on a command line, and that will fix the problem also.

Elixer,

Thanks for that info. I'll probably go ahead and upgrade anyway (with the archive option set of course) since I have ghost images of the HD...

Are you kidding? Sp4 was the first one that did anything worth a darn. It was stable and solid. I see tons of people that stoped at SP4. Now SP5...that was a big steaming pile of dog ##@$@.

Can you still update to only SP2?
You sure can! Get it while it lasts...

They wrote the code, they hand picked the hardware, they had a relatively small (in comparison to that of IBM-compatible PCs) list of software to test... so why the need for a "massive overhaul of how the system works and runs", not once, but twice, and for that matter, at all?

WOW. Let the mac vs. pc war begin.........

Hey, where can I get more info on DRM-blessing for SP3? Any hard evidence it was NOT included in SP2, SP1? So far I got SP1 and I'm happy with it. Don't really see a reson to install SP2 (downloaded it though...)

for blue screen of death problems.

I had a blue screen of death for service pack 3. But, it said on the blue screen of death to disable the shadow ram. I did so, rebooted
and was ok. Service pack 4 had no problems. Except now, when I goto the internet, zone alarm asks me if I want to allow services and controllers to access act as a server.

ANy ideas?

What is meant by "digital rights management"? Does this mean you can not play mp3's or something like that?

Yes, what exactly is "digital rights management". Does it do somesort of tracking/reporting or monitoring of copying of "copy write" software ?

thanks

PS - agreed wrong forum, but inquiring minds just got to ask

If I recall, isn't digital rights have to do with MP3s that can be used for a specific time or something? BTW: When I set up Media PLayer 9, there was an option to uncheck the stuff about digital rights. I just disabled that.

Are all these service packs inclusive, i.e. does SP4 contain all the tweaks from SP1 thru 3? Or do you need to install SP1-3 first?

You DO NOT have to install SP1, tehn SP2, and SP3, before applying SP4. THe Service packs include previous releases.

If you had to apply each one, MS would have to make then available to everyone all of the time. 129MB is a hefty Download, our corporate Firewall people came to visit me after I downloaded it, and wanted to know why I downlaoded so much stuff... Damn Internet Nazi's.... No bandwidth for you...

HeinekinMan, One of my other PCs is 440BX based. SP4 fixed my shutdowns. It used to take about 3 minutes for mine to shut down, now it does it as fast as it's supposed to, Everything works good so far. I also installed on a KT266A and nForce 2 motherboards and both are working good.
