If anyone can help on this, I'd be greatful:
Tried to install a cleanboot of windows 2k (and later xp for that matter) this weekend on a new HDD. Under both OS's though I had trouble getting the cd-rom or cd-rw to work properly. The OS worked well, I could move files, send email, etc, but if I tried to install anything via cd-rom, the computer would hang, lag, and eventually freeze. I could occasionally limp the computer through one cd, but then I'd stick in an audio cd and it would lag/freeze/etc. It didn't matter which cd-rom I had plugged into the ide cable, or in which order. The cdrom works fine in dos, as the install went clean off CD at that point, but as soon as I'm IN windows, it hangs.
Possible lead?: When installing the OS, BOTH cd's (2k and xp) came up with "cannot find driver.cab" which isn't crucial to a working OS, but sure makes things easier. Could that be a cause for the hangups? Other than that, I tried installing multiple times, on a clean HDD, always with the same result.
Currently running win98 successfully with a PII, 350. When I re-installed win98, both the cdrom & cdrw worked perfectly. I would normally continue to be happy with 98, but I've got a few programs that won't install on anything older than 2k.
again, any help would be MUCH appreciated. i'm currently running dueling harddrives, so I can tinker all I want on the xp/2k one if anyone has shot-in-the-dark ideas or WAGs.
