At work we have a small network of computers that are connected to a dell windows 2k3 server. We purchased a new printer last week, and the printer was connected to the network, and I tried to install it from the server. The printer was assigned an IP at 169.254.240.240, but the server only recognized it for a little while. I was able to do print two jobs, but after I came back a week later the printer was not being detected by the server again, even though it was on the network. So I pinged the printer from the server, and it was getting no response! This was very confusing to me. I tried from my boss' laptop, and it pinged the printer fine. I bypassed the server and printed directly to the printer from the laptop and it also printed fine. Now, none of the other computers on the network are able to see the printer, why is that?
