From what I've tried (RC1, for three months), I'd say no, I hadn't noticed a single performance increase, and if there was it must have been only in specific games and negligible at best. I did notice some better responsiveness outside of gaming for booting up, opening some programs (including Steam, but it might have been a placebo effect), but for gaming alone at least RC1 wasn't offering anything over Vista SP2. But that's just my observations.

If all you do is game and what you've got works, I wouldn't bother upgrading just for the sake of upgrading. A new build though, there's no reason to go with anything else.

Uh...last I checked, better was a comparison. Is Win7 64 better for gaming then what? XP32? Vista 32? Vista64? OSX? Linux? The commodore amiga?

Do you use more than 4GB of memory? Do said games have 64-bit builds? Do you play 16-bit games?

New PC? 64-bit, no reason not to unless you want to run really old games.

Pay $100+ to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit? No, unless you are about to upgrade your memory capacity.

If you have XP I'd say don't bother to move to W7 until you do a whole new build unless you want to do 64bit and/or run 4GB or more RAM.

Upgrading for the sake of upgrading, there's no specific benefit... However, if you are going to buy a new O/S I'd suggest going 64-bit now and leaving yourself the headroom later. I've been running Win 7 x 64 Ultimate with 8 gigs of RAM since release (I run a lot of Virtual Machines and game on the same machine) and haven't found a single game compatibility or performance issue with anything I've thrown at the machine so far. Take in mind even if you have 4 gigs of RAM with a 32-bit OS, any decent current generation video card is going to chew up a gig of address space or more leaving you with 2.5-3 gigs or less available system RAM with any 32-bit operating system and the inherent address space limitation.

64bit isn't better for much more then fast access to the over 4gb of ram. That being said, some applications will benefit from it (Some actually come out slower when compiled for 64bit)

Might as well go windows 7 64 bit, 32 bit is pointless, ive been using 64 bit for the past 3 years without any trouble/noticeable difference.

What non DOS 16-bit games do you know of?

If you have 4GB or less i would stick with 32bit, seems more compatable for gaming.

Dont get me wrong i had been running 64bit for a few years and never had an issue till the steam x-mas sales. I bought Serious sam HD, Burnout Paradise, Bioshock and some other games but these were the only ones with problems. I could not get any of them to work and after screwing around with the steam support which is a complete joke BTW. I re downloaded them each 3 or 4 times which sucked cause there servers were dog slow over the holidays i decided to just for the hell of it try installing 32bit OS. Now all games work fine.

I didn't have any problems running any of those games in Vista 64. All ran perfectly fine and have never had any problems running any recent game. There's no reason to stay with a 32bit OS for any reason whatsoever unless you have a critical application that will only run in a 32bit environment and someone that needs that won't be posting that question in here.

I have had no problems with Vista x64/Win7 x64 in gaming and I do a lot of gaming,I always keep my video drivers and DX9.0c updated in both Vista/Win7 x64,this ensures no gaming problems....I could meantion keeping TAGES and other copy protectection software updated too for any games that may need it.

LOL i know, everyone told me they run fine in 64 bit. But serious sam had no sound, burnout would crash during the intro movie and bioshock would crash everytime i changed the res. Then i said screw it reinstalled to 32bit vista and they all ran fine, with the same files even i didnt even reinstall them as my steam directory is on a seperate drive so i just reinstalled steam client pointed it to that folder and all the games worked fine with the same files, wierdest thing i have ever seen but it solved my problems, only thing i changed was 64 to 32bit OS, same drivers and everything else

I've been trying to get 64-bit W7 to work for months, it simply does not work. Zyxel unbelievably STILL do not have any 64-bit drivers for their wireless network adapter so, no internet.

I did get a new Linkysys USB adapter that was certified for Windows 7 64-bit use, but Linksys have removed the drivers from their website! I'm going back to 32-bit because it actually works.

Actually works?? There either something wrong with you technical aptitude or you're trying to use some really really old obscure hardware. Windows 7 64 and Vista 64 have been very stable gaming platform for YEARS.

It's probably something simple like a driver issue or overclocking(that can vary between OS etc...).

I use a Zyxel X550N router with NBG-460N firmware (same hardware, but the international version has been better supported) and a Zyxel NWD271N wireless USB adapter with Win7 x64 Home Premium with no networking problems whatsoever. They may not have Win 7 x64 drivers nominally, but you can use the Vista x64 drivers with no problems.

Often--in all of my personal experience--if you cannot yet find Win7 x64 drivers for your hardware, Vista x64 drivers will work. I am sure it is not always the case. In regards to your particular issue, check at both the U.S. and the global Zyxel websites for Vista x64 drivers for your particular wireless network adapter, and give those a shot. DSLReports.com also has a useful Zyxel forum that might be of benefit to you. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/zyxel

If you can get stable 64-bit drivers for all of your hardware, then there is no reason not to use 64-bit. While it is true there are no real advantages at the moment (except for support for more ram), there are no real disadvantages either. Performance of 32-bit software under 64-bit is very comparable to running in a pure 32-bit environment.

In my view the only real problems you might encounter are compatibility issues with early xp era games. Some rely on 16-bit installers which will not work under 64-bit. Others use direct older than Dx9, so those can cause problems. Of course, those will cause problems under 32-bit Win7/Vista also, so thats hardly a slight against Win7-64.

I can say with 100% certainty that your problem had nothing at all to do with the OS being 64-bit.
