I've had Windows 7 for over 2 years and have had little problem with it but now recently my Aero settings will just crash for no reason and revert to a basic view. The only way to fix it is to run the troubleshoot utility. Why is this happening all of the sudden and what can I do to fix it?

Check the Windows Event Viewer under Windows Logs; Application or Windows Logs; System for any warning or error messages. Post back with your results.

You can try this... Click on start button in the search box type Aero and look for Find and fix problems with transparency and check for problems.

You can also try.... Right click my computer > properties > Advanced System settings > performance Click settings button ....and make sure you don't have "let windows choose what is best selected", choose Adjust for best appearance or customize it yourself.

Also, since you say it "will crash", didnt some earlier Nvidia drivers cause this even while just sitting at the desktop.
Even if its not a Nvidia card, i'd be sure to have all drivers updated to the latest.

The Desktop Window Manager has encountered a fatal error (0x8007000e)

I think that's the one that applies. There are 6 of these errors today alone.

Could you post your hardware specs please, and confirm which power plan setting you use. I'm assuming you run the default "balanced (recommended)" plan, and your computer turns off the display at 10 minutes then goes into sleep mode at 30 minutes. Do you see both the Desktop Window Manager and Aero crashing after the computer wakes from sleep mode? In the meantime, while waiting for your reply, follow MTDEW's suggestion first and try installing the latest driver for your video card.

Oddly enough, i was just thinking of suggesting to set the power plan settings to high performance and adjusting the turnoff the display and put the computer to sleep options to disabled and see what that does.

Or try doing a clean Boot and see if it still occurs.

I've checked and double checked my power settings and they are all set to "optimized for performance/appearance" options, so it shouldn't be trying to save power where it can. I'm going to search for a driver update and will post back if it helped the problem.

Hardware:
Sony Vaio with 64-bit Windows OS
Intel Core i5 Processor
4GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 310M
