Windows 7 and RAID 0

Hello. I just configured a system with RAID 1. 2 drives are installed, BIOS is configured correctly. When installing Windows 7, do I have to install a RAID driver during Windows setup (the same way I would for XP/Vista) or can RAID work without installing a driver during setup?

I am asking because I did not install a driver and I do not see any ASUS software that shows me my RAID configuration or status in Windows.

Thank you.

Generally you need a driver because those onboard RAID controllers don't actually do much of anything, all of the real work is done in the driver. Without a RAID driver the drives should be detected individually regardless of the BIOS settings.

Ditto what Nothinman says.

I use a RAID 1 array for data storage, and it is controlled by a separate card. It has 4 SATA ports plus one eSATA port. It pops up right after POST, and shows the status of the array, and is where changes can be made if needed. This is PRIOR to Windows loading.

Windows starts loading right after the RAID controller screen. Once loaded, Windows just sees the RAID array as a single lettered drive.

I loaded the proper driver at the beginning of Win 7 install. After I select the driver, should I see some type of confirmation that it is the right driver? After I selected the driver, Windows went back to the screen where it asked me to select a driver???

I continued with the install assuming the RAID driver is correct.

Windows may pick it up just depends on the controller.

If windows sees the drive and not 2 separate drives than your good. To see status in windows you have to install the software for the raid like intel storage matrix software should be something on your motherboard cd.

All should be good now. After installing the Asus chipset, I now see the drives in the program provided and it says Mirroring and both drives are listed a c:\ with the disk space.

I have (2) 750GB drives, but the system only see 6.98GB. Any ideas?

That is normal due to the base 10 to base 2 conversion if you are seeing 698
