Windows 7 antivirus

Just installed Windows 7 and realized that my trusty McAfee VirusScan 8 enterprise won't work

Any suggestions? Preferably a free solution

I'm currently using Panda Antivirus which is very nice. Absolutely no nag screens which is great. The process is currently using only 3mb of memory, if that's important to you for some reason. And the really cool thing is that they're offering the beta Windows 7 version for free at the moment.

In the past I've used AntiVir, AVG and Kaspersky and they've all been pretty good but they all have nag screens which piss me off.

You can disable the nag screen in AntiVir by denying access to the executable "avnotify"

that's been my favourite antivirus for the last 6 months or so.
it's very light and has great detection rates.

Kaspersky is what I'm using. They have a version just for the Win7 beta, that's exactly like the Vista version I had. They was a link to it in to action center when it was crying about the version I had. There were links to several of those already mentioned in the thread.

I've been sticking to Kaspersky for years now, but after trying out new Norton I have to say I'm impressed. (2009 version) It's a very, very different from the Norton that I used to know.

I had renewed a family value pack [of kaspersky] that I maintain for my fols and decided to take the current 3rd license for myself on a visit. While it runs rather flawlessly and has blocked a bunch of crap, it does destroy the battery life by about 40-50% if I start running a bunch of apps

I tried AVG on my Windows 7 system - bogged it right down... AntiVir is much lighter on resources.

Kaspersky used to be great... around 6.0 was when it peaked. I went from 5 all the way till this year and I jumped to NOD. AV enthusiasts typically pick Kaspersky or NOD but I never understood those NOD fanboys until now. The software is so much better.

NOD32 is also at the top of the pack when it comes to resource management. Norton 2009 is actually there too but given Norton's poor track record prior to the current version, I decided to pick NOD instead. Wow. Within no time I updated my whole household's Kaspersky protection to NOD.

Memory is one thing, but unless that thing hogs up 500mb of your resources, it should be fine. The key is the general responsiveness gets decreased and AV Comparatives shows Avira in the middle of the pack.

I had some early issues with NOD32 (my previous favorite in XP/Vista)

Afterwards, I tried both AVG and the Kaspersky beta Suite, the former ended up crashing my machine and forcing and gave me serious problems when attempting to uninstall. Kaspersky was nice, but far too much hogging of the resources it did.

I ended up with Avira AntiVir. It's free, light, simply the best one imo.

NOD32 works great on Windows 7. I'm running Windows 7, and NOD32 right now while typing this.. Coming from Symantec to NOD32 in an environment of 2,000 machines really was night, and day.. Norton 2009 however is a terrific step in the right direction for a desktop product from Symantec. Avria people are in love with now, but the free version nags you with an AD when you update.. If you are looking into a free solution go Avira, if you are going to spend money Norton or NOD would suite you fine.. It appears that Symantec's pulse updates are doing really well against Malware especially fake AVs.. I get 2-4 updates a day from Eset though..
