Let this thread contain the problems and solutions we have encountered while installing and using MS Windows 7 Beta.
Here are two issues I encountered with solutions that I believe will help others.
During the beginning of the installation, I selected "Install Windows" and promptly received the following error.
I attempted to install Windows 7 from a DVD burner connected to the motherboard with a SATA interface, without SATA drivers. Somehow, the motherboard is able to recognize the DVD drive and start the install process but is unable to continue. This confused me. In the BIOS, my SATA Configuration | OnChip SATA Type is on the RAID setting (RAID & AHCI). This is the selection for the hard drive controller driver that selects between (IDE/SATA, RAID, and AHCI) on an ASUS M3A78-EM with an AMD 780G chipset.
Solution
I pulled a DVD burner with the standard IDE connection interface from another computer, installed it in my MS Windows 7 computer, and changed the BIOS Boot selection to this IDE DVD burner. With this setup, I was able to install Windows 7 Beta.
Here is another common problem but it is not specific to Windows 7.
How to switch from IDE/SATA to AHCI hard drive controller driver in BIOS.
It is important to select the proper hard drive controller driver in the bios before installing the operating system. Normally, AHCI should be selected but for this ASUS motherboard, the RAID setting is intended for RAID setup and it includes the AHCI driver. The SATA selection is similar to the IDE driver from older motherboards.
In WinXP, it is difficult or even impossible to switch from an IDE/SATA driver to the AHCI driver without reinstalling the operating system. In Vista and I assume Windows 7 also, it is possible to switch from the IDE/SATA driver to the AHCI driver with a simple registry fix.
The AHCI issue is described in more detail here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahci and this article refers to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 922976
