FIXED - For some reason Win7 and VISTA are picky about the time being set correctly on both PC's. The time was correct within one minute but the date was off by 2 weeks. After fixing the date on XP3, everything works correctly.

P.S. Cisco's Network Magic found this error.

Strange networking problem. 2 Win7 boxes and 3 XP pro boxes. The Win7 Boxes cannot see shares on one of the XP boxes as summarized below.

  • Three PCs running XP Pro with service pack 3 - XP1, XP2, XP3
    Two Pc's running Windows 7 RC - W71, W72
Both W71 and W72 can see shares on XP1 and XP2 but NOT XP3
XP1 and XP2 can see shares on all the XP Boxes
XP3 can see shares on XP1 and XP2.
All the XP boxes are XP Pro SP3 fully updated, firewall off, simple file sharing turned off.

All have same username and password, user has admin rights. All are on the same subnet. All can ping, All can remote desktop to all.

For trouble-shooting purposes I did a clean load of XP Pro SP3 on XP3 on a spare drive. Still can't connect to its shares from the Win7 boxes.

Any ideas? I googled a lot, but nothing worked. The Win7 boxes show XP3 on the network list but cannot access the shares not even admin shares.

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions.

General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Vista File and Printer Sharing- http://technet.microsoft.com/e.../library/bb727037.aspx

Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;304040 http://support.microsoft.com/d...x?scid=kb;en-us;304040

Thanks Jack,

No 3rd party firewalls installed, Windows firewall is off on all systems.

You're in network browsing hell. It can be very difficult to fix. Basically this is a name resolution/browse list problem. What happens when you try to access the machine directly with \\ipaddress to view a list of shares?

\\hostname\share does not work

\\ipaddress\share does not work

If I run Softperfect Network Scanner from one of the Win 7 boxes it can see XP3 but cannot see the logged-on user, LAN Group, or OS.

If I run Softperfect Network Scanner from one of the XP boxes it can see XP3 and can see the logged-on user, LAN Group, and OS.

If I type dir \\XP3\c$ from the command line on Win7 I get
"Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."

If I type dir \\XP3\c$ from the command line on one of the XP boxes it works fine.

Just for grins I tried a different network card with the same results. I also tried static IP with the same results.

Not sure what's up with that. Maybe related to SMB "Signing", which was used by default in Server 2003 to ensure the integrity of files transferred across the network. Having dissimilar dates on the computers would likely mess the trust between computers. But, by default, Vista disables SMB Signing. So I don't know why that'd be enabled at all unless thre's a Windows server involved.

Glad it is fixed.
I really really hate the way the networking options are set up in 7. I don't want the whole public, work, home settings, just let me do it like xp.

Yap you are right when it comes to you, myself, and some others around here.

However out class is only few % of end users.

Most End-Users do not care to know any thing about Networking (would take time off watching weddings/funerals of the celebrities and the like).

For these rest of us it might be help, more security than living their personal credentials, and finance info in Internet cafes.

Okay then,

Here's a weird one (or maybe not) - about a month ago when I'd bring my Win7 work laptop home, I could access any/all the shares on my two XP machines at home, then I bring it home a week ago and now I can only access one of them , as I get the 'Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" on the other (our main one).

Nothings different between either XP system other than a few programs (i.e. the main one has iTunes, VLC Player, Picasa, Skype and Google Earth, where the other one is my sons and it doesn't have much on it) and windows updates are up to date on both. Plus, I haven't added any third party programs to the main system, I've only updated a couple (i.e. VLC Player and iTunes)

I know the problem is with the main XP system as the Win7 can connect to my son's as before, so I've gone through forum after forum and tried ALL the 'clock sync' 'TCP\IP, and 'Registry' settings/suggestions, AWA shutting off ALL firewalls/AV's, but no matter what I've tried, I can't access our main XP system anymore , but I can access my son's just fine .

I know my info isn't much to go on, but does anyone have a 'net path trace' program that shows the full net path of the login, so I can see where the break is (i.e. not 'tracert', as that works, but like fiddler, which shows the full net path to a website) and/or any other places/settings to check/try?

Thanks in advance

P.S. Windows FW is off on all 3 systems JIC anyone asks.

maybe this explains the errors I was having logging into my NAS unit, since the date on the unit wasn't set up right.

What's a good timeserver to set? One that is several down on the hierarchy, so it doesn't load down the main timeservers?

Nope, I just synced the time, and it still won't let me connect via the GUI "map network drive" password dialog. It forces the username from a simple username to a "COMPUTER\username" format, which the NAS doesn't like.
