Windows 7 CD Key Not Activating

Hi

I have a problem with my windows 7 cd-key: its not activating. I relatively recently bought a CD key from ebay that was supposedly legit. Install went fine but now it wants me to activate my CD key. I have tried online and the automated phone service but neither has worked.

Now, my 1st guess is that the CD key was not legit but the guy did provide a photo of the CD key attached to his laptop. I did notice the words 'OA' next to the key - have no clue what it means though.

Assuming that the key is not legit, is it a problem? What I mean is that will all my programs work? Do I retain full windows functionality?

I tried activating online with a different CD key. This time it gave an error 0xc004f063. It says " The software licensing service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license". I'm running an old Asus Striker Extreme 680i SLI. Is that a problem?

Right it is an OEM version it is legit on his computer Not yours.

It seems like the key you got is an OEM key. That would require SLIC in your BIOS and a correct certificate in your Win7 installation.

Look at http://forums.mydigitallife.info/forums/16-Windows-7 for more information about Win7 activation. There should be a tool there for analyzing your key (OEM/retail etc). You could also join there and ask there.

I'm not sure why phone Activation didn't work, but I can tell you that the owner's selling of that Key violates his End User License Agreement with Microsoft. MS licensing rules require that an OEM license can only be sold along with the original PC it was installed onto. A legitimate sale would have included the PC and the attached COA sticker.

I contacted the seller and he is sure that it should be working fine. I quote " : Hi! No, there weren't any restrictions. Though, I never even activated once because I formated right away when I got the Laptop, then I used the Ultimate key that I had purchased earlier. No idea why you are having problems. You did install the Home Premium and not any other version, right? "

I've joined the forum JesseKnows suggested and I'm waiting for a reply.

To confirm though, do I lose any functionality from W7 because of this? The background has turned black and I can see the W7 version number and windows update isnt working correctly.

Your installation is Not activated and the Key is useless.

So basically you got Nothing for your purchase

The owner performed an illegal transaction selling it to you to begin with.

You should make arrangement to get your money back and buy a legit Win 7.

This is obvious to almost everyone, but I will state it for those that honestly don't have a clue. Don't buy software keys from people who show you a sticker on the underside of their computer. OEM keys can only be legally used on the hardware it was initially installed on. This transaction was illegal from the beginning, whether it would have worked for the buyer or not.

Also recommed that you file a complaint to Ebay and ask for a refund from Ebay.
They brag about how risk free it is to purchase off Ebay.

Just do it, don't let that guy take your money.

eBay knows it's a violation of the EULA to sell opened Microsoft OEM software. They'll support you. The reason that the COA sticker is on the SELLER's computer and not yours is because that software license is permanently attached to the SELLER's computer.

The key he sold you is a SLP key (System Locked Preinstallation), it cannot be activated online or by phone. The laptop or desktop must have the correct bios and certificate. The bios needs to be slic 2.1 capable.

These keys cannot be sold and are only used by large companies like HP and DELL.

If you are able to embed the key it will activate though.

Whether it can be embedded or Not, it is illegal to do so and use this key.
