Windows 7 format and RAID 1

Hi all!

I currently have an Intel X25-M 80gb SSD as my main partition with Win7 Home Premium 64bit installed.

For my storage, applications and games etc. I have a 1TB WD Caviar Black HDD.

I am familiar with the hardware aspect of computers when it comes to assembling them and stuff. However, the software side and prepping drives through the BIOS and partitioning etc. is another story.

Essentially, my issue is that I am running out of space on my caviar black storage drive and just recently purchased two 1TB Seagate 7200.12's to put into a RAID 1 configuration. I installed the drives as usual and created a RAID 1 volume, then i rebooted and instead of my mobo POSTing like usual I got a split-second BSOD then looping restarts.

Please correct me if I am wrong but from my understanding since I initially set my SATA in 'IDE mode', I need to set it to 'AHCI mode' which would allow me to run RAID configurations. This means that I would have to reformat my primary drive with my OS (my Intel SSD).

My question probably has an obvious answer but because this is my first time I wanted to make sure 100%:

Do I have to touch my drives at all (both software wise or unplugging/replugging anything at all hardware wise? Do I need to back up my important data on my SSD only, or my caviar black 'storage' drive too?

Anything else I should know about setting up my RAID 1?

Thanks it is much appreciated!

P.S. A friend mentioned another thing I could do is use an imaging program such as Acronis to make a backup of my current Windows? What exactly does this entail? What exactly would be saved, like just my desktop, favourites, folders and file positioning OR like all content and everything on my primary drive.

Also I have read that I am able to switch from IDE to AHCI mode by tweaking some Windows registries or something. Thoughts?
