They are called family members, this isnt a license to share with your buddies, its meant for people wanting to upgrade the machines in their own home.

Not to be snarky but why not share them? It's the same price for 1 license. I understand it's not to be resold. Why the same home?

It doesn't have to be in the same home. They don't check IPs or anything.

But what does the EULA state? Don't get me wrong, I am not here to pass judgement on it. I am just curious to know what the EULA states of their physical location.

Good price, now if I could only pay a third of that, I'd be set. It's incredibly rare that I boot into Windows, but I'd like to have Win7 instead of XP for when I do. For how much I'd use it, I can't justify spending full price.

HOT DEAL! I paid $129 for mine a few months ago. I might pick up another as these come in quite handy.

For those that don't know, you don't have to upgrade to use these either. You can use the Microsoft approved double install trick to install a fresh copy. Works like a charm!

why is everyone so worried about the EULA when it comes to windows? any other software, like games with drm, people dont give a flyin shit about it and thats generally accepted as OK. those license agreements are moreso to cover the companys ass then it is to enforce how they actually want their product to be used.

Stupid Q, but what is this trick? The machines I've updated so far have had WinXP on them so I haven't had to worry. (well worth the upgrade IMHO)

The "trick" is to do a clean install first, without entering in the product key. Then reboot, and run the installer again. I don't enter the product key during the install, but wait until it's done the second time around. This actually does work.

If you have a hard drive that already has XP or Vista on it, you don't have to do this. (Assuming a clean install, I've never done an actual upgrade before)

Actually, the better method of doing a clean install is to do the "Registry edit method", so you don't have the bloat of the double-install method:

This is the procedure I used on a new hard drive and it worked great. By the way, I'm a licensed holder of both XP and Vista, fyi. You are on your honor of course that you are in fact upgrading, so don't think that I'm sanctioning being a scumbag here if you don't own a PC with some version of Windows on it somewhere in your house.

FYI - You don't need the bloat on a double install. If you boot up and it detects an OS, you can still do a new install. When it gets to the drive options screen, you can delete the partition, recreate, format and install. MediaBootInstall in the registry will be set at 1. What determines whether that is done or not is whether the OS detects a previous install on the drive options screen during the install. You care free to format and it will still record that you were doing an upgrade (clean one!).

Ran into this several times because I went to do a secure erase on my RAID 0 SSD setup. I tried to activate and was told I could not. This never happened before, so then I remembered the difference. It wasn't whether it was a clean install or not, it had to do with Windows detecting a OS during the initial install. So, let it detect it and blow it away with a format.

I checked, the first time I bought Win7 family pack. On the side of the box, it has a URL, but last time I checked, it wasn't valid. I found a related page on their web site, that essentially stated that anyone who bought a legal copy (family pack) was eligible. They didn't state anything about having to be in the same location.

No, but its not allowed as part of the EULA. Anandtech is always "anti circumventing the system" and I just wanted people to know that while this would work from a technical approach, its not legal. If you are going to do this, why not just finish pirating it?

Not trying to be a dick or anything, just letting people know that as per the license this isnt ok.
