You'll get an email confirmation immediately, then when it's released you'll get another email with a download link and product key.

That's not true. Unlike Vista, each successive version of Windows 7 is a subset of the previous version. HP has all the features of Basic PLUS it's specific features, Pro has all the features of HP plus its specific features, and so on. Moving up the chain in W7 never loses a single feature.

As for the XP upgrade issue, this has been covered MANY times by dozens of sources. If you get a Windows 7 upgrade license, you can 'upgrade' from either XP or Vista. The difference is, with Vista you can do a true in-place upgrade where all of your applications, docs and settings stay in place (just like reinstalling Vista over itself today). With XP, you have to do a clean install, wiping out everything and starting over. What has never been clear is what happens if you stick in a W7 upgrade disc into a completely new PC with no existing OS (or linux, for that matter).

if I have a desktop with 64 bit and a laptop with 32 bit Windows 7 RC on both, do I have to pay 60? or can I download both and use the one key?

I can burn as many CDs I want with the digital copy from Digital River, but does anyone know if you can make copies of the CD sent by Microsoft? I like to keep backups of my software, just in case...

Went thru the order process and all that, and got a confirmation, but no product key yet. Does that not come until I get the download link on the 22nd?

Got this from slickdeals if anyone is still curious if this is the upgrade or full version. I may get one myself now.

Is it really true that the downloaded version from digitalriver is the full version? Everything on the site sounds like its the upgraded version, and I don't have vista... x.x

Yes, it is. Has been mentioned before. Below is the email I received after asking them that question:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting the Windows 7 Offer online store.

We apologize for the confusion. The Windows 7 offered in this promotion
is a full version. You can install this product even though you don't
have the previous operating system on your computer or if you want to
make a multi boot using the Windows 7.The upgrade include in the product
name is just because Windows 7 is the latest operating system Windows
developed.

Sincerely,
Mailen G.

You can burn as many copies of the CD as you want, but they're all worthless without the keys.

The next step is to wait for the family bundle which is not a bad deal for three keys for $149. That's less than $50 a key for the H/premium version. I know this is the same price as the pre-ordered Win7 HP which expired last July 09 but far better than a regular priced Win HP.

The worst part about this is I designed my comp for xp, built it shortly after vista came out but never got vista, but now I finally have a reason to get all of those upgrades I don't need and can't afford...

Is it confirmed that the keys provided are for a Full version? Has anyone tried doing a clean install yet? Already ordered a copy of Win7 Pro, but getting kinda worried it isn't the Full version now...

From a slickdeals user:

"I downloaded Win7 Pro 64-bit.
I burned to a disc as an iso (the 3 files that expand into the setup folder) and made it bootable.
I restaretd my compuer and booted DIRECTLY from the disc.
Within the setup, I was able to modify partitions, including deleting my old XP installation.
I used the key that DR sent me and the installation accepted it.

Further evidence that the installation is in fact an full install is that I had to reinstall because my first installation got messed up. The fact that I didn't need an OS to do this (as you can't use win7 to upgrade to win7) means that theres a good chance its a full install."

Hope this works.. I just built a new machine and don't want to plop down extra cash for a Full version of Vista
