I ordered Win 7 Pro from digitalriver and got my key. I also called the MS store and ordered a full version of windows 7 using the same e-mail today. The shipping is free for now (usually shipping is not free) I only paid tax. They are sending me the Win 7 full pro version 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs for ~$31. For $2 more no reason not to get the DVD's. He also said it is the full not upgrade version, we will see.

i finally decided to make the switch out of XP. Im wondering if I should get the 32 bit or 64 bit win7? I know my CPU (Intel Q6600) can support 64-bit, but Im wondering what are the pros and cons of 32-bit vs. 64-bit.

Anyone care to give some advice?

The biggest pro is the ability for the operating system to address 4GB of memory or more. 32-bit versions usually cap around 3-3.5 GB, for various reasons.

Almost all 32-bit applications will run just fine on Vista / Windows 7 x64, so unless your computer is used for mission-critical purposes, I'd just go for the 64-bit version.

My DVD FINALLY arrived!!! Took long enough... I spent the extra $13 for the DVD itself. I might do the actual upgrade over the holiday weekend (need to make a backup of my main drive first).

How long did you have to wait? I got a ship notice in late October, still waiting on my DVD. The free upgrade from Dell for my Studio 14z shipped out a week ago and it's already here.

why bother getting the DVD anymore? They provide the ISO now. DL the ISO and burn your own DVD.

Hell Everyone, I orderd the 64bit pro on 11/18 and still not received the disk that was mailed out. No tracking number provided. I guess they used frst class mail. I e-mailed Digital River and they replied it takes 7-14 days to get to you. Did anyone here receive theirs within that time frame or longer? Since I am doing a custom installation the downloable version will not work right? I have a new pc with no OS so have to wait or have digital river resend the disk. Thanks.

I didn't order the disc, just burned it, but from reading other's posts it seemed to take much longer than their quoted time. The disc they mail you is no different than the one that you download though, so go ahead and burn it and use it. Even though it's listed as an "upgrade" version, it is actually a full retail one, so no previous OS is required on your system.

I ordered mine through the Microsoft store. They sent it the next day, and I received it a few days later. The other advantage of buying it through the store is that it comes in the full retail packaging with both the 32 bit and 64 bit editions, rather than just one edition on a disc in a sleeve as others have reported.

is ordering through the microsoft store different than the one on win741.com?? Can you post an order link? thanks

I'm not sure if they are different or not. Some people have claimed that they could order one through each vendor if they did it in a certain order, etc. I'm not going to try it. But, I called the MS store at 1-877-696-7786 and ordered on the phone. I asked about the Windows 7 special for students, and then specified that I wanted the full Pro version (not an update) mailed to me (so it will include both 32 and 64 bit editions). Their website seems to be hosed at the moment anyway... at least for me.

They also have (or had?) a deal for Office 2007 Ultimate for $59.99, but it is unadvertised and only available over the phone AFAIK.

Calling in an order to the MS Store is the way to go. For $30 plus your state tax, you can get a full (or upgrade, if you want) version of Win 7 Pro. There is no wait time when you call, and they just ask if you want Home Premium or Pro, an upgrade or a full version.

I'll have to give them a call and try to order it. I went on the ms store website and it doesn't show the student discounts. What info did they need over the phone?? just your .edu email??

heres the link
http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx
for the ultimate office deal, it also has a link at the bottom for Windows 7 pro. I wonder if thats the full version.

I called the number on the Microsoft store website when they had it up, and the call center was in Canada and wouldn't tell me the name of their company. They just said they weren't Digital River. It was shipped from Washington state via UPS.

Does anyone know what Digital River tracks, the name on the credit card or credit card #? I ordered an Office 2007 Ultimate about a year ago with my edu email and paid with my credit card. I was satisfied and I wanted to order one for my daughtrer. Using her edu email I placed an order but when I put in my same credit card info, it told me I had already purchased my allottment of one. I had my wife put in her credit card info and it was successful.

If they follow the name on the credit card, I'll have to do this with every purchase. If they follow the credit card, I can get multiple credit card numbers (temporary) from my B of A account under their "safe shop" program. You tell them how much you want to put on a credit card for internet shopping and they issue you a unique credit card number for that amount. After your finish shopping you can cancel the card and the credit returns to your original card. Chase has a similar program. Also, you may be able to use the credit cards you buy at the store (there is an activation fee).

I imagine they'd track the number, because plenty of people in the US have the same name.

It would make sense for company's to track by the cc # itself. Wouldn't hurt to try with a temp card which would have a different # with your name and see what happens. If you do so, let us know. I wonder if they'd take those Norton rebate debit visa cards.

Most posting here don't think there's any problem using the same physical mailing address either.
