Hi all,

I recently discovered a network issue on my Windows 7 machine.
It goes like this:

Press the on button, ctrl-alt-del and type username and password, desktop gets available and then the icons in the lower right start to show up. (this can happen on cold boot or restarts)
When the network-connection icon appears it show a blue turning circle.
This can go one for 10 seconds to 3 minutes and then the blue circle changes in a red cross. This is also just a few seconds and then everything turns back to normal. Except for a window above the network-connection icon that shows me that a network is found an connected.
All this time i can browse the web, I can see and browse my local server and other connected computers in my network.
Right-click the network Icon gives me no respond until the icon shows a proper connection.

And I also noticed this a few days ago. Might be there for a longer time but I already did a fresh Windows 7 install, without any success.
I cannot exclude any cause because the problem is not always there.

I also searched the web for solutions/questions and it seems that this problem is a known one but I can't seem to find a proper solution.

I use a cabled network, fixed IP, latest drivers for motherboard and network card. I run Windows 7 pro 64bit.

Anyone with a similar problem or who can lead me in a good direction feel free the guide me.

thanks in advance.

To be clear, is this actually causing any functional problems? Unless I'm misunderstanding your description, this sounds cosmetic.

Yes it does.
It takes more time to finish the startup proces.
Sometimes it hangs for 3 minutes, so it is not only cosmetic.
Avast and ASUS AI are not complete loaded before the network icon turns normal.

But before a week ago the pc was always turned on because of running server software, so I didn't notice it and it also didn't cause any trouble. Now the computer needs to turned on and off because it's only need is home use and I want to get rid of the issue.

If a remember correctly there might be conflicts between ASUS motherboards and Atheros drivers.
Also run MSConfig and check for startup programs.

Is your board's firewire and bluetooth enabled? It seems like at one time or another I had an issue with these ports trying to connect to something, thereby making it appear that the network port was not connected.

Well I did the test like this:
Started the computer into the bios settings, turned off the onboard Bluetooth and Firewire, saved the configuration and rebooted the system.
Just like it should boot, without any problem and without any network searching things.
But I decided to reboot just to make sure and guess what:
A little blue circle shows up at the network connection icon, grrrr.

Random shot in the dark: after you boot up your computer, disable your internet connection (under the Network & Sharing Center), wait 5 seconds, and reenable it. I once saw an X79 board with a Marvell NIC that had a problem similar to this (it would get stuck in a detection loop) and this would fix it.

Odd, really . . . My Win 7-64 system only takes a few seconds to show "Internet access" on the network icon after the desktop appears.

I encountered the same problem recently while setting up my WHS-2011 server. The network controller is nForce from LGA-775 days. Because the system boot disk was an old slug of a Seagate SATA-II (7200.10), I wanted to use a newer hard disk (an SATA-III WD Blue). So I reinstalled the OS on the Blue drive, which seems to be twice as fast (even on an SATA-II controller). With the reinstall, suddenly the apparent "hang" and delay I'd had before disappeared.

Then I reinstalled the nVidia ethernet controller drivers released as late as 2010 (the Microsoft drivers were dated 2006!!). Again -- same problem. Once the connection is established, it's stellar. I'll troubleshoot further, but won't fret about it now.

What about specifying the DNS server addresses of your internet provider at the workstation? That's supposed to speed things up a little, and I haven't got around to that little detail.

Create a new profile and see if you can replicate it.

Couple of things to try:

1. remove any network mappings
2. turn off the windows firewall and disable the service
3. disable the AV for startup

Post back findings

thanks in advance.

It is probably something related to AISuite II. I've spent this weekend putting together a new system based upon a Sabertooth Z77 board and AISuite II gave (and in fact is still giving) me fits.

What specific utilities do you have installed under AISuite II? If there is a "Network iControl utility", uninstall it from AISuite II. Also, if you have the fan control software installed, try the following:

As soon as you boot to the desktop, run Services.msc. Under Extended Services, ASUS will have several different services installed. Click on the "'AsusFanControlService" service. Does it show the status as "Starting" and not "Started"? If so, try to change the startup type for the service from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed)" to see if this changes anything on the next boot. You also need to check your Windows System log in Event Viewer, filtering the log for Warnings and Errors. Do you have any warnings there about the ASUSFanControlService hanging at startup, or for that matter any other ASUS service?

I ended up having to remove the ASUS fan software and manually disable the "AsusFanControlService" service (it doesn't get uninstalled when the ASUS software is removed, and the system won't let me manually delete the service for some reason). I just installed Speedfan instead, at least for now.

thank you all for the advice given but I guess it's gone now.

1.It was nothing related to Asus and VIRGE's tip was not possible to accomplish.
While the blue network icon is turning I cannot enter any network settings, only through CMD.
2.My DNS is specified, ...

I must say, I tried all of these suggestions but noting seemed to work.
Until I found BlackVipers Win 7 services configuration.

I only shut down some services like homegroup, windows time, firewall, ... the usual stuff. But following this page, I set all settings like DEFAULT professional and tweaked.
Most of the services were default but some of them were listed as automatic. And I'm very sure that I didn't touch those. The services who are not necessary I put to the safe or tweaked setting.

Since these changes no problems showing and the system seems to complete its startup a little faster to.

In my case it was the "ESET SHA Service". I've noticed that it's status was "Starting" about for two minutes while blue circle hangs over network icon in notification area. After I've changed "Startup type" from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed start)" and problem was solved.
Looks like sometimes some services or apps in startup tries to use same resources as Windows network connections services and hangs the normal process. In this case you should change startup type from "Automatic" to "Automatic (Delayed start)", "Manual" or even "Disabled" if you know you don't need it. If you cannot open Services window through "Control Panel", try WinKey + R --> services.msc --> [Enter]. If you cannot do that, try clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135/en-us. More, you can try some software like CCleaner to check Startup programs and disable them. Remember, that the list of Startup programs can be comlpetely empty.

This worked for me and it surely will for you. Click on run dialog and type msconfig. In the pop up click on services. Then check/tick Hide Microsoft services. In the ensuing dialog uncheck/untick Nividia Network service. Finally click Apply. restart computer. Your problem will be solved.
