Just saw this via Engadget and thought some early adopters might be interested: http://www.engadget.com/2009/0...ed-pre-orders-start-t/

"Finally, as a way of saying thank you to our loyal Windows customers, we are excited to introduce a special time limited offer! Customers in the UK, France and Germany, can pre-order their copy of Windows 7 starting July 15th and will run until August 14th (or supplies last) to ensure folks don?t miss out on this. Question regarding upgrades:

- can I only upgrade from XP Home to Windows 7 Home Premium, and XP Pro to Windows 7 Professional?

- does it require an activated copy of XP Home or XP Pro already on computer to install? And will that XP Home / XP Pro key then be inactivated?

No special upgrade pricing for Ultimate, I take it? I guess I'll just wait until I get it through my university then

Yes

Installed yes, as the upgrade works like Vista, has to be started from in windows, at least on the rc version. Activated, not sure

Ok, just to get a dumb question out of the way: I have two main computers: A new Dell laptop with Vista Home Premium and a my desktop with XP (which is full install disc). So I only need 2 upgrades?

I guess I should log into my EggXpert account some day.

That's interesting: "...copies of Windows Vista sold on Newegg will include a coupon for a free upgrade to Windows 7..."

It's weird what MS is doing with Windows 7 Utlimate. Sayiing it will be "limited distribution", but pricing it (at Retail) only $20 higher than W7 Professional.

And, no pre-order upgrade price for W7 Ultimate means that folks using W7 RC are going to have to pony up $220 to keep using it.

I remember that vista upgrade actually could be installed on a "clean" hdd. You installed the OS twice, the first being temporary and the second validating the upgrade key on the first. Hopefully that will remain the case with Win7.

I'm definitely not paying $299 for a retail Win7 Pro or $199 for the upgrade. Thankfully, I have an old copy and license for XP Pro just in case.

Which versions will have Remote Desktop and Media Center? That were the only reasons I got Vista Ultimate. If I can avoid paying through the nose again for Ultimate (hopefully Pro will do), that'd be nice.

Edit: n/m found it here and here.

Pro will have RDP, MC, and XP Compatibility, none of which are in Home Premium.

Hmm which version should I buy? I will plan on doing a clean install regardless. I wonder what special features are going to be included in Windows 7 Ultimate? I did like the dreamscape stuff in Vista but I figured it would get old so I settled for Vista Home Premiun 64.
Which version should I get?

This is not correct, Home Premium will have Media Center, as stated in both of your links.

Windows 7's versions are much easier to understand than Vista's, each step up includes everything from the versions below.

Doh! My brain knew that, but hands typed out MC anyway.

BTW, does anyone know the actual time that the offer starts?

Can anyone explain, simply, what the extra features of Pro vs. Home Premium allow you to do?

I think they are mainly for stuff like connecting laptop to company's system?

Well you could get away with 1 disc, but you would need 2 keys and seeing as they dont just sell the keys you would have to get 2 discs

you could also check dell, it may qualify for an even cheaper upgrade. kinda like what they did with vista when it was announced and still had machines shipping with xp still

Ok so in Canada as of tomorrow the 26th, I should be able to preoder and buy Windows 7 at Best Buy or Amazon.ca???? is this correct?

I like Win7 so much I am all over this -- i would have anyhow bought the full retail version but this is icing on the cake. Just hope it materializes in various stores like BB or Amazon.
