Windows 7 only gives 1024x768 resolution

solution - display modes that are "unsupported" pick a mode that should work.


upgraded from Vista Pro to Windows 7 Pro, and now i can only do 1024 resolution, when i was previously able to to 1280 resolution.

I know my video card is really old, but windows 7 and the nvidia driver tool say i have the latest drivers. that might be true, but it's not useful information, since i want to run 1280 resolution.

And I'm not using the Release candidate - as an EE student i got early access to the full version of Windows 7 Pro.

any ideas how to get 1280 resolution before i buy a new video card (which i plan to do eventually anyway)

Have you tried to install the Vista drivers in Windows 7 just to see what happens? Sounds like a driver issue.

With a card that old, I doubt there are any manufacturer drivers special for either, but worth a try.

If that doesn't work, uninstall the driver and used the default Windows driver.

AGP I assume?

i have AGP, i am using the default windows driver now.
i tired uninstalling the driver i had and am now using windows one...

You might have the latest drivers, but that doesn't mean they aren't from 2005. Not even the manufacturer probably supports the video card anymore, let alone windows.

yea, good call malak, i found a new video card to use. i guess you're not supposed to have 2 gigs of ram and a 2.6 gig P4 with a 16 mb video card...

I recently had a similar problem with Vista not allowing anything over 640x480. To fix it, I unchecked the "hide unsupported resolutions" option in the monitor tab of display properties. It then displayed all the resolutions and I just picked what I needed. Worked great.

Just for the fun of it, I stuck a Rage 128 Pro AGP 16MB card in an old Dell GX270 (2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM) machine. It handled 1680x1050 without a problem using the default Windows driver. I think the card came out in 2000, so about 9 years old. Granted, I didn't try playing any video, but for surfing it was okay.

yeah, showing non-approved modes managed to work out. it just wasn't part of the default settings. cheers
