A few things to bear in mind:

• This update is hardly game-changing. It’s nothing like the Vista SP1 update. Here you have a roll-up of bug fixes and previously released updates. Nothing really exciting.
• If your system has one of the following hotfixes installed - 2406705, 979350 or 983534 - then you are going to have problems installing SP1. Workaround for this issue is listed here.
• If you have a beta or RC of SP1 already installed, you’ll need to uninstall this to install the final release.

Changes specific to Windows 7
Additional support for communication with third-party federation services:
· Additional support has been added to allow Windows 7 clients to effectively communicate with third-party identity federation services (those supporting the WS-Federation passive profile protocol). This change enhances platform interoperability, and improves the ability to communicate identity and authentication information between organizations.

Improved HDMI audio device performance:
· A small percentage of users have reported issues in which the connection between computers running Windows 7 and HDMI audio devices can be lost after system reboots. Updates have been incorporated into SP1 to ensure that connections between Windows 7 computers and HDMI audio devices are consistently maintained.

Corrected behavior when printing mixed-orientation XPS documents:
· Prior to the release of SP1, some customers have reported difficulty when printing mixed-orientation XPS document...

It adds support for Sandy Bridge processors, but I'm not aware of any other major new features.

They usually roll all bug fixes, security updates, and new/changed features (that didn't make it into RTM or user requested) into service packs. They've never limited them to only security updates.

I know and I hate it. Service Packs should be bug and security fixes only. If they want to make new features optionally available separately that's fine, but they shouldn't be forced upon people.

Nobody is forcing you. Microsoft has a history of supporting previous Windows service packs for at least 2 years after the latest one is released.

They do, however because new features are added, individual pieces of software inevitably end up depending on them so you have to be careful if you want to try and stick with an older SP. MS' own software is frequently guilty of this so it can be difficult to avoid.

The main changes in SP1 are tweaks, or enhancement of some enterprise level functionality (e.g. IPsec).

However, only brand new feature that most people here would want is support for AVX (the new 256-bit instruction set supported by Sandy Bridge CPUs). Sandy Bridge CPUs do work on Win 7 (original release) and Vista - but the AVX functionality cannot be used, and apps that require it won't run (or will have to run in non-Sandy Bridge optimized mode).

Because the further each update makes the SKUs diverge they more difficult they are to support. Adding features in the middle of a release cycle is stupid, that's what new releases are for. If they want to add new features they should do an RX release, like they do with servers.

We all understand the issues that come out of it, but you do have at least a couple of years support from MS on the older version from the time the SP comes out. If that's not enough time for you to test that everything still works and make any changes needed, then ... :whiste:

Not support from an application development angle, from a tech support angle. Remembering which versions of which SKUs support what is already a pain and adding new features in SPs just makes it worse. There's nothing stopping MS from releasing those features as separate installers from their site and/or releasing those R releases as free upgrades. The fact that they charge for the R2 releases of server OSes is pretty reprehensible as well.
