I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a friend's computer and it was working fine for a week but all of a sudden "Startup Repair" pops up on startup and runs for a very long time before booting into windows.

He says that this pops up each time he starts up the computer so it takes an extremely long time before it finishes and he is able to use the computer.

Here is a screenshot of the dialogue box: image

Here are his computer specs:
Core 2 Duo E8500
Asus Striker Extreme 680i Motherboard
4GB Corsair DDR2 RAM
74GB Raptor HDD (windows 7 is installed on this drive)
1TB Black HDD (used for storage)
8800GTX

Any idea what may be causing this problem?

Thanks!

I had Startup Repair start up before. In my case, I think my cpu was overheating since the fan software I installed probably bugged out and turned off. During bootup, it asked me if I wanted to start 'Startup Repair' or start normally.

The Startup Repair is very unhelpful in providing any information about what it's trying to do. Probably ran for 30 minutes and wouldn't let me cancel. Same useless screen you posted. At the end of it, it just said it didn't know what was wrong and I started up normally again.

I think it's optional (at least in my experiences). Try selecting 'normal' startup option during bootup and see if that works.

I doubt his CPU is overheating. It says "repairing disk errors" on his computer. Did it say that on yours too? Perhaps his raptor is going bad?

I think it would be annoying to select normal every time it starts up so I want to try to get rid of the message completely for him.

It usually happens when there is problem in the Boot and reading from the HD.

When ir finally starts check the HD with a good HD eval. application.

Also look at the Device manager and make sure that there is No Ghosts.

P.S. In vista and Win 7 it does not look like the ugly yellow sign that is shown in XP, but there is a similar Visual Indication.
