Windows 7 Theme keeps automatically changing

Is there anyway to stop Windows 7 from constantly changing my color scheme to basic from aero?

I have a high end rig but anytime i tab out from a game it says that it has changed the scheme to basic for me to save memory.

I like windows.. but these dummy options are getting too fucking much for me.

I am not sure, but maybe just search through the control panel and look for options like, allow windows to automatically *do whatever* Yes, no.

I ony have my mac with me right now so i cant tell you for sure.

The best way is to not use an auto changing theme. If one of the pics in a theme is especially appealing, just use it and create your own theme. Those choices are in the Win 7 "Personalize" menus.

that's not what he is referring to..

anyway I believe its 100% automatic I do not believe there is any setting to disable it.
if it senses it doesn't have enough free resources to run aero it kills it.

I do not have the issue at all on my game machine though.. but it does have 2 1 GIG cards in SLI.
I can alt tab all day long and never run out of resources.

I notice it happens a lot when I run things in OpenGL and DirectX 9. There is nothing you can really do about it in particular except to get a program called Windows Blinds. It allows you to change your theme to the windows aero (and also create your own custom theme if you wish) and windows can't automatically change it back to basic.

That is the only real work around I have found.

Stuff and nonsense. Windows canned themes can be uncanned and used to create a cstom theme. I have three Win 7 machines and they stay with the background I want - no changing.

The OP isn't talking about the desktop background. He's talking about the fact that Windows 7 sometimes turns off Aero.

OP, what applications in particular cause this behavior? Some older games expect to have full control of the GPU which forces Windows to disable Aero (since Aero uses the GPU).

This is a normal and expected feature of Windows 7. Certain apps, like mfenn said, expect full control of the GPU, so Win7 turns off Aero and compositing. When that app exits, though, it should automatically re-enable. Does it? Or is it stuck in "basic" desktop mode? That would be a bug, if it stays that way and you have to manually re-enable Aero.

Ah. Well that would explain it then. I play a game Mount & Blade and it happens quite often when i play the multiplayer. It's a game from a small nobody company.

Just getting the message is the ridiculous part. Have a gtx 280 and 6bg ram and i7. And Windows thinking setting my scheme to basic from aero will save me sufficient resources is laughable.

The only time I ever remember customizing windows appearance options affecting my computer was when a 300mhz processor was considered top of the line.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I appreciate it. If i cant stop windows from doing it, at least i know why its doing it now. better than nothing.
