I would do the upgrade and try it out as is. You have 30 days where you can roll it back unconditionally from within windows without any third-party software.

I think the OP is concerned that a rollback after a botched update would jack his software applications... I would tend to agree with him.

Because I've had that happen on other devices that I went from 7 to 10 back to 7 on, yes that is a concern. I've created an image with Acronis. I stored that on a 500GB HDD I had (yeah, I tested it first to make sure it was in decent condition). I couldn't get Acronis for free through the WD website. Couldn't see anywhere that that was possible.

Given OP's job and the fact that they don't appear to already have some kind of backup solution is why I suggested what I did.

I've rolled back, stuff works fine. Why wouldn't it?

...but YMMV. The instances of the W10 upgrade borking up one's install are evident.

But I agree... and I'm always mystified, users that have 'critical' data... and no backup system.

You must allow for people who don't know as much as you, who haven't learned yet. You must also allow for people who may not have the same budget as you. That's also a problem for people.

You can get a 32GB flash drive for 10 bucks these days. A simple backup is cheap. At the very least do a copy/paste of critical files every so often.

Oh, believe me... I'm as dumb as a rock when it comes to computer stuff. I'm a hardware guy. I have learned from direct experience, however... :'(

As far as budget... how much is your data worth to you? I'm not saying mortgage the house for 5 hard drives, but there is almost always a solution...

Yet OP is in business for themselves and their job is to manipulate data.

And they don't have a backup solution. I upgraded, rolled back, and upgraded again.

If you care about a thing, you take care of it. You don't treat it as common. If OP cared about their data, they'd have just asked about the backups first, W10 shouldn't be on the radar yet.

Or just whatever.

Ok, listen, I've got a whole other thread where I'm trying to develop good practices for backups. Don't be so darned presumptuous about me, what I do, how important my data is, how much I do or don't care about my stuff. I'm asking here about W10, that's all I wanna know. If you can help, great, if not, then don't. But if you think I'm a moron, I'd rather you kept it to yourself.

If you are worried about your data you have somewhere double or triple backups of them, if you don't have any backups then don't touch your pc since any use of it can make your data inaccessible, via hhd failure, corruption, fire or surge.
The answer to your question is up to you.
The rest of the world dont know what is the worth of your data, or a failure of the system how much will each day cost you till you have a system up and running.

What's presumptuous about using the information you've freely provided?

I offered my suggestion based on what you provided, which was a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants approach to your data.
