Win 7 extended support for enterprise versions only is until 2020. This means pretty much security updates only.

Support for Win7 Starter/Home Premium/Pro/Ultimate ends in January 2015.

Nothing really changes since we have only seen security updates for the last year anyways. I would not expect to see many non-security related bugs at this point anyways.

It likely means media center will continue to get guide updates until at least 2022. Although Internet TV (in fact I think Internet TV ended on the original scheduled Win7 end of life in 2012), and most of the gallery is already gone, so who knows.

Internet TV was dropped 9/20/2012. It was dropped in both Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions of Media Center. Had nothing to do with end of life or support dates. Plus you have to pay $10 for WMC in Win 8, although it was offered for free for a limited tine.

This means nothing in practice. MS will make sure to force you over to 8.x long before that if you want your games and applications to run with the latest features.

Anyone taking bets if MS extends it like 98/ME/XP/2K3? Vista will be the 1st OS put to pasture on time since 95.

I hope not, every OS comes and goes ,we all need to move on,besides older operating systems tend to have poorer security and that opens up a whole can of worms on the internet which we all happen to use.

When did they extend 2000, 98 or ME? All of them were supported for less time than the 10+ years 7 will get.

Enterprises will continue to buy Windows 7 machines until 2015, and they will have a 5 year lifecycle, so ending support in 2020 makes sense.

But most of us will be on Windows 10 by then.

I think they are going to have to. Win 8/8.1 still has way too many issues for Windows 7 active support to really end in Jan 2015. Although most of the issues I know of don't really impact enterprise use so I could be wrong.

7 is old and tired by now. Plus you want 11.1 or 11.2? Full proper support? Win 8+, you want all those platform updates in the future? Win 8+. Etc etc.

It doesn't matter. I suspect Windows will go back to being great again as soon as Ballmer and all of his hacks clear out. (Depending on who the new leadership is).

If we actually see some fresh talent with some fresh ideas take the helm at MS, who knows? Maybe they'll get back on track with creating something truly revolutionary.

Point is, there's plenty of time between now and no more support for 7 for MS to make Windows great again.

2000 didn't have such a push for the extension because 2K3 was a totally viable alternative. I'm surprised 98 didn't get supported much longer.
