Windows 7 Update Adventures

Ever since Microsoft decided that I should use Windows 10, every attempt at Windows Update has been a problem. Endlessly searching for updates and a regular stream of error messages is now the norm. Even if the updates show up, you have to check every single one to make sure it doesn't take over your computer. Wonder when MS is going to start labeling backdoor system files as "Important Security Updates"?

Today it's Code 80244019 error. According to the helpful information from Microsoft, a computer virus is the most likely reason. Not likely since I just ran Malwarebytes and a system scan with Eset NOD32.

I call BS on MS. It seems Microsoft's business plan is to make anyone who doesn't upgrade to Windows 10 as miserable as possible. Maybe I can't switch over to Windows 10 TODAY, why won't Microsoft allow users to upgrade their systems when it is convenient for them.

Let's see how much time I have to waste today with the Microsoft Corporation. The "free" Windows 10 upgrade is like a "free" gunshot to the head.

I gave up. Not on Windows 7, but on the whole LiveUpdate process to force me to migrate to Windows 10. There is a consequence to give up the protection of my machine to critical updates. But my decision is final. My laptop's LiveUpdate feature is on disable. I just topped out on the misery index. Simply put, I don't trust Microsoft. Microsoft already is calling some updates important, that were deemed Windows 10 optional say 3 months back.

Don't know if you've seen this thread in the same forum. If you haven't, check it out. berryracer has done a terrific job of detailing the front door and back door updates. But even with all this information, it is just too much of my time to keep at bay Microsoft's endless and unethical pursuit of making all Windows 7 and 8 users, migrate to V10.

No problems with updates on Win7 here.

I googled the error and found this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/3epuvu/windows_81_update_error_code_80244019_windows/

I did the same and used the troubleshooting tool a couple times along with a couple reboots and registry cleanings. After a moderate wait, Windows Update listed the current updates including an optional update to improve Windows Update. Finding very little information about it, I passed, critical updates only from here on in.

They regularly release updates (monthly I think) which are just updates to Windows Update. I think they normally released them a week or two before patch Tuesday.

How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options
To block the upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, specify the following registry value:

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1
Microsoft has given you a simple registry value to express your opinion in a way your computer can understand, and your computer will adhere to it. Wouldn't have taken you longer to add this value than posting in this thread.

Note: The last part of the key is "WindowsUpdate", the forum software somehow splits it to "WindowsUp date".

Thanks for that helpful info, but this thread regards Windows 7 updates, not Windows 10. There is no mention of Windows 10 in the update in question. Would have been easier for you to ignore this thread than make that post.

Automatic Windows Updates are "off" and have always been off.

My point here is that Microsoft is not being clear about what these updates are and what they do so the user can decide whether to install them or not.
