Windows 7 Upgrade Trick?

I have Windows 7 installed right now, I upgraded from Vista when 7 came out. I'm going to do a reformat in a few days and I'm wondering if Windows 7 upgrade edition still allows you to do the trick that Vista upgrade edition allowed, where you do a clean install of the upgrade edition and then "upgrade" from windows 7 to 7, bypassing having to have a previous version of Windows? Or if that isn't there anymore, do I just have to install a clean version of Vista and then 7 on top of that?

Thanks.

Be careful on the reg hack upgrade on W7 as one of MS updates checks for the hack and when it does the next time you reboot windows will clam your OS is not not genuine and you will start having limited functions..I know I had it happen to me as well as others. I had to re-install XP and do a proper upgrade

I just found out about the Windows 7 double install trick over the weekend and tried it on two different machines and it still works perfectly fine

I recall that you, or somebody else on these Forums, had run into that problem.

Wouldn't returning that Registry Key back to its original setting fix that problem? I'd think that once the upgrade is completed, the Key could be set back.

Personally, if I had an Upgrade-only Key and wanted to re-install after a former clean install from XP, I'd do the double-install method, just to be safe.

I've got three or four machines using the reg hack method. One or two have the reg hack reversed after the install. None of the machines has shown any problems after 3-10 months of use.

It may of fixed it but I never tried as I just used a old image I had of Vista and did a upgrade from there that is until I bought the MS Technet.

As far as the double install I tried it prior and had no luck. Wish I could remember which update it was that started looked for registry hack but well its all a bad memory now.

It's weird, I'm going on a couple of months now with the registry trick, fully updated Win7 and I haven't imploded yet.

A lot of times these upgrade tricks get k-lined at SP levels. I always expect some of the cool hacks to be shut down too when SP1 come out.

I usually just buy the full-blown clean install version though.

so, the double install is just that? Install w\ upgrade media, reboot and enter setup again and choose upgrade this time?
