The title says it all. Which windows should I get for the ultimate gaming experience? Any suggestions? Will windows 7 eventually be better than Vista 64X?

I would go with Vista 64. By all accounts Windows 7 will be better; however, I would let others take on the role of beta testing and wait until all the problems have been ironed out.

Never buy a Microsoft product until after the first service pack is released.

Good thing windows 7 is free until july 2010

Why is such a good thing? They're giving you W7 for free, to make you all their beta testers, without paying you.

The big issue with Windows 7 is there is no punkbuster support. If you play any games that use punkbuster like Battlefield 2 then stick with Vista.

Windows 7 will definitely be the gaming OS of choice... eventually. I use Vista 64 and will probably switch next winter. Being on the leading edge of hardware is expensive and sometimes buggy, but being on the leading edge of software is nearly always buggy.

FYI, you can run punkbuster in build 7000. Google it and you'll see the workaround.

I read that windows 7 64 bits, will be retro compatible with the 32 bits, does this mean every bug caused by 64bits will be resolved in windows 7 64 bits ?

If yes, that's good news for gaming and everything else !

I would say go with Windows 7 Beta if you can stomach the possiblity of unknown problems, virii, software exploits etc. It's not officially supported, so you don't know what could happen if you use it as a primary OS long term.

That being said, I was using it as my primary for a few months before I got Vista 64 Ultimate, and I really liked it.

Vista BSOD'ed on my system about 10 times in the 5 months I ran it. I've been running Windows 7 for 5 months and have exactly 5 dumps in my minidump directory. That means it's 50% more stable on my box, not bad for a beta

And all 5 crashes came from an Windows Update that my AntiVirus didn't sit well with. My Vista crashes came from driver issues and random for no reason crashes.

My Vista crashes due to Creative drivers 100% of the time. No crashes with anything else, I need to get the evil out.

Audigy 4 working great on my Vista x64 for last 2 years(Don't use Alchemy that causes crashes).

Never had a crash in Vista x64 for ages ,if I had 10 crashes in 5 months then I would suspect something else in Vista ie driver or software since there is always a reason, to be honest I had loads of BSOD /installation issues with Win7 beta 7000 build in early days ,some was down to incompatible software/ drivers and being beta OS too.

Right now with 7100 build things are much better.

Back to Vista or Win7 is a tough call IMHO,ie both working fine on my PCs,however Vista is up to SP2 while Win7 is still going through testing stage, add in the fact Win7 has DX11(plus point for gamers) ,also we don't know if Vista will get DX11 or not down the road makes it a tough call.

I guess you could go with Win7 RC build and wait for retail version of Win7 which would be the cheapest way of getting a new OS.

My instinct says Win7 because of DX11 ,end of the day both are very good operating systems ,anybody that can't get Vista stable in my books has a problem somewhere else on their PC,simple enough to change anti-virus or incompatible software,I had to do that with Win7 but did not take me long.

I don't get it. THey said it's free until july 2010. I just like this because a) I'm cheap b) I can't stand vista. I up-downgraded from vista to xp pro on my laptop. The little i've used windows 7, I like it. Considering Vista is dead letter, I can't see buying vista as a good idea ntil they give out the upgrade coupons.

Not a fan of MS in any respect, but having a year plus of windows 7 fee can't be a bad thing.

One bad point for me, apparently the beta I'm running will be not be upgradable with the release version. I read something about a work around but I think it just involves doing a user migrate and not keeping all the programs you have installed intact. I hope this isn't true as I don't want to have to do a clean install once Windows 7 is out.

Anyone know more about this? If this is going to be the case, I would have no problem buying Windows 7 and uhh finding a way to "extend" my beta to never expire. I'm having no issues with it what so ever so I wouldn't care.

Guys Vista will get DX11. MS is not worried about people not upgrading from Vista...

That said, I just played with the RC the other night and it's no faster at games than Vista was. I heard 7 was supposed to be faster than XP. Go figure.
So that just removed almost all my reasons for upgrading. Oh well.

I would never use a Beta Os as my main OS. Vista works great for everything. I would wait until W7 is finalized and yes I dual boot both.

Uhh lol, Windows 7 build 7100 has been more dependable and stable than Vista, and I have it running as my main OS. Also, I have been running vista for about 1-2 years now (x64), have it installed on a business PC it works good there but not on my gaming/good PC.

With time and support, and service packs, then Windows 7, surely, especially with the Windows XP Mode integrated in it, which will allow some old applications/games to work better under that mode in case there's compatibility issues, it's like a compatibility mode on steroids, but I wonder if XP mode under Windows 7 x64 will emulate 16-Bit for 16-Bit installers, I'd presume not though.

I have been using Vista x64 as a gaming PC and beta games tester for over 2 years now,so far its not let me down,I suggest you have a problem elsewhere, btw you saw the other thread with another member here that has over 400 games installed on his Vista PC.

I say it again Vista is stable as Win7(ie both very stable),Win7 is based on Vista anyway and its still in the testing stage , most people here know they will improve and fix those Win7 bugs etc like they did with Vista.

Most people using win7 in the OS forums think it is perfectly stable and have not run into any problems with it- as soon as it is released to retail ill be buying it. Vista 64 is an excellent OS though just win7 uses less resources and does the same things.
