I'm having a common yet strange problem with Windows 7 pro and i'm hoping I can get some help. I have done some reading and tried the suggestions of running chkdisk and doing a windows repair but neither of those have worked, windows repair says there are no problems to fix.

I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop all running Win 7 pro. The main desktop has a 160gb Intel 320 SSD and does not exhibit any of my problems. My laptop is a thinkpad T430s which was recently formatted when I installed a 120gb Crucial M4 mSata ssd as the boot drive. My media pc is running a 64gb Corsair Performance 3 ssd as the boot drive.

On my laptop and my media PC I keep having problems during the o/s bootup. When windows loads and I enter my password to log on to my computer I see the welcome screen and it just hangs there with the blue spinning wheel. I can leave it for an hour and it won't go anywhere.

I would say that I get this problem 50% of the time that I start either computer, the only solution i have been able to find is to restart the computer and try again.

I'm not really sure what else to try from here. When I was looking at the specs of the ssd's the only similarities I could find was that the crucial and the corsair both use Marvel controllers while the Intel uses an Intel controller, I don't know if this could possibly cause this problem though. The crucial is running the latest firmware, i'm not sure about the corsair, but i would bet that it isn't on the latest firmware.

I recently reformatted the media PC since it was also having this problem with the previous windows install, lo and behold the problem is back.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Nothing happens when you press CTRL-ALT-DEL while it is stuck?

Try unplugging the network connection before powering up. If using wifi, disable it then reboot. That's not a solution but at least it might give a hint as to what is causing it to freeze.

Have you checked the Event Viewer for errors/warnings?

Start > Run > eventvwr

Windows Logs > System log

Thanks for the help

I'm working with my laptop right now since I have it with me. There is nothing plugged into the ethernet port and I have no wifi connected. I have tried with wifi enabled and disabled. When i get stuck in the welcome screen the computer doesn't respond to any key or mouse commands.

After 2 bad boots I restarted the machine and successfully logged in, here are the Warnings from the Windows Logs -> System Log

1st bad boot:

-Warning WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped

-Warning Kernal PnP (the driver \Driver\WUDFrd failed to load for the device USB\VID_147E&PID_2020\6&1aff30e1&0&3)

-Warning e1cexpress (Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection Network Link is Disconnected

2nd bad boot:

-Error Service Control Manager (The ESET Starting service hung on starting)

-Warning WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped

-Warning Kernal PnP (the driver \Driver\WUDFrd failed to load for the device USB\VID_147E&PID_2020\6&1aff30e1&0&3)

-Warning e1cexpress (Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection Network Link is Disconnected

Thanks

That ESET one - I assume that's a security product I'm aware of?

Try safe mode?

Iffy AV update perhaps. I remember a few occasions when anti-virus products malfunction, it causes the system to seize up almost completely (long delay on Ctrl+Alt+Del, then a message saying it failed to bring up the security options). I've seen that most often with Avast.

If you can get into safe mode, I would probably run a removal tool to get rid of ESET if it can't be removed normally due to Windows Installer not liking safe mode. Simply removing it, booting OK then installing it from a new install binary from the ESET site should do the trick.

......Warning WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped......

.....Warning Kernal PnP (the driver \Driver\WUDFrd failed to load for the device USB\VID_147E&PID_2020\6&1aff30e1&0&3).....

Try this: Click Start, type services.msc in the search box, then click the services.msc icon. Scroll down to "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework" and double-click to open the dialog box. Verify/change that "Startup type" is set to Automatic, and that the service is started. Reboot the computer to test if the error still occurs.

Bubbaleone,

I followed your steps, the startup type was set to manual. Setting it to Automatic and rebooting didn't solve the problem.

I left the setting set to Automatic and moved onto MikeyMikec's recommendation. I downloaded the newest version of ESET smart security from the ESET website, booted into safe mode and uninstalled the old version. Rebooted and installed the new version. Since then everything seems to be working on my laptop. I've rebooted 4-5 times and not had any of the original problems. I'm not sure which suggestion solved my problem, but the combination of both of them seems to have worked.

I will try this combination on my media PC tonight to see if it solves my problem on there too.

Thanks for all the help

download Windows ADk. there are 2 utilities included, Windows Performance recorder and analyzer. Run the recorder and reboot to see what service or file is causing the issue.
