Windows 8.1-compatible LGA775 mobo

I have a Core 2 Quad Q9550S on an older Intel motherboard running 64-bit Windows 8.0. The motherboard cannot handle CMPXCHG16b, so I can't upgrade to 64-bit Windows 8.1. I don't want to drop down to a 32-bit OS.

Can anyone point me toward an LGA 775 motherboard capable of supporting 64-bit Win 8.1 so that I can retain the rest of my hardware?

LGA775 sockets are pretty old these days - you are probably stuck at Win 8.0 unless you get newer hardware.

I have a Gigabyte EX38-DS4 LGA775 board with a Xeon E3110 (Xeon version of E8400) that is running windows 8.1 64bit.

I thought it was the processor that supported compare exchange 128 or not. It's a CPU instruction, right?

Yes it is a processor instruction. Perhaps OP just needs a BIOS update or check the BIOS config.

My workstation is running nearly the same processor Core 2 Quad Q9500 and it's rocking Win 8.1 64bit.

Seems that while the Processor DOES support the required Instruction, you also need BIOS support.

my even older Athlon 64 X2(Brisbane) is running 8.1 x64 with no problems, also the motherboard latest bios update is from 2007.

any core 2 should support 8.1 x64 and CMPXCHG16b

I've seen 8.1 x64 run on a "Cedar Mill" Pentium4, so it has to be a board issue... :hmm:

I would be reluctant to use too old of gear even with Win 8.0. Definitely nothing with a 775 socket and an integrated video chipset. If the motherboard does not specifically say it is Win 8 compatible, don't try it. My older motherboard with a E7200 and a Intel DG35EC did not do well with Win 8. It might have just been the Integrated video. Runs great with Vista. Reloading Vista was a real pain.

Me too.

I'm running it on an Intel DP43BF with an E8500 without any problems. Granted this was a late production board in the life of S775, but that would have caught me off guard for sure.

It won't be any of the nVidia chipset motherboards as they were all moved to legacy support when Windows 8 came out. (although Windows 8 may actually install on these boards)

I've been using my nforce 6100-430 (2005) board with windows 8 since it came out and updated to 8.1 x64 with 0 problems, everything works, windows have all the drivers needed included,

Just download the "regular" inf installer for the 5/6/7/8 series. It contains everything back to a least the 900-series.
