Windows 8.1 Forces Installs as "Run as Administrator"

So I have a new one. Since updating to 8.1, I've noticed that whenever I try to install anything, if I do not right click and "Run as Administrator" that the install will either be stuck or not run at all.

Does anyone know what causes this and how to turn it off? It's annoying having to force an install to close because you forgot to run as admin and then have to reboot since the OS still thinks its trying to install even after a force shut down of the install.

Thanks!

whoa, I've never seen a buggier OS than 8.1 really.

this new 8.1 spring update has another serious bug, when you reboot, once you open any folder, the desktop icons will not be clickable for about 1 minute. and all the icons will lose the icon image and will turn into white/blank

I never faced you issues since I run every program by right clicking and choosing Run as Admin

I get this a lot in XP too. I like it, because it (seems to) limit the scope of what could be installed maliciously on a limited account, but if it's trying to install things without giving the "need to run as Admin" warning before it starts installing, then it sounds like Windows 8.1 (and/or the programs) still have some annoying quirks to work out together.

yep, UAC on Vista and later should get this right. I still get program or two failing to trigger UAC dialog, and then they fail to install in different manner: fail to write files to Program Files.

UAC will, based on heuristics and information within the install manifest, decide whether to escalate or not. There are applications that use techniques to avoid tripping prompts upfront and those can be moderately successful (Old Chrome, WoW updates) or not (iTunes, whatever you're using).

Here's one for you. I run spotify and if you know spotify when an update is available it'll let you know. You click the link and it auto updates to the newest version. Well, I update and it keeps telling me that a new version is available. In order for me to actually get it to install, I have to go into the start menu, find spotify, right click and run as admin. Then it'll install. So even for apps that don't need permission, I still have to give it permission. I'm kind of wondering if that's what is preventing Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 or 2013 from installing... I hate 8/8.1. I never had any of these issues with windows 7 ultimate.

gonna disable UAC and get done with it

Bad idea. I have zero issues on two boxes I updated. If anything, USB 3 is a lot more stable and doesn't dip as much; the MS driver has been updated.

why? If a program needs it, it'll elevate or it's poorly written.

With UAC, someone needs physical access to your machine to do terrible things. Without UAC, they can party all over your machine without physical access.

It's like running everything in Linux as root. You don't.
