Either way I look at it, this is pretty funny:

1. Microsoft is grudgingly listening to it's customers (wow, they must be desperate, lol) and bringing back a start menu.

2. After 22 months, Microsoft will bring a start menu to 8 and people are going to flock to it (yeah, right)!

I have nightmares of the old Start menu being here for 100 years lol,two decades was more then enough, however I hope Microsoft experiment with new Start menus like you see in Linux distros and don't listen too hard to some of the customers,it's one thing listening and another thing staying on an old design forever.

I hope Win9/10 has something new/modern and different from what we have seen so far.

I'll say Linux has some of best Start menus IMHO,Microsoft could learn a thing or two.

I hope I get around to looking at those again. It has been years since I have looked at those, but have heard things are going well with different distros.

I hope they leave an option in to use Win8.1 the way it is now. I've found it's so much easier/convenient to use than the old start button.
Of course this article is just rumor so who knows how the new Windows will look.

Just running 8.1 fine as is myself awhile now.

I really never saw much difficulty involved personally after a few days.

Good news. Those of us who want the start menu can drop the 3rd party add-ons like StartIsBack and Start8.

Windows 8 made me realize that I don't need a start menu. Bringing it back will just get in my way.

The Start Menu that by its very design covers only part of the screen gets in the way more than the Start Screen that completely covers your entire desktop?

Somehow, I doubt that. IF you said this about the Start Button, I could see your argument. But saying it about the Start Menu when the current option is far and away worse at "getting in your way" is really the most absurd argument you could make in defense of the current status quo.

All that said, you should be aware the Start Menu--according to Microsoft's twitter--is an OPTION that can be turned off. That's how it should have been from the beginning with Windows 8.

This is great, if only so people can get past their start menu fetish.
Win 8 is a lost cause though, it'll never get rid of the "flop" label. If they re-release Win 8 + updates as Windows 9 people'll probably love it all of a sudden. Like with Vista and 7.

All my stuff is availabe much faster with the start screen. At it's best, it was two actions on the start menu. Same with the start screen. The next best was three actions, with typing being the second action. Same with 8.

The hate is because people hate change. My flow was interrupted for as long as it took me to customize the start screen.

It's nice that people are getting the option to go back what was familiar and clunky, but the current implementation is fine.

BS.

People hate change when its for the worse.

Look at smartphones and tablets, massive change to what was on the market years ago, everyone including me loves them, because they are genuinely better than the nokia phones or the slow as balls junk ware ridden netbooks we had before.

BS,change is change and you always get some people moaning, you can bet Win9,10 there will still be some people moaning about something and trying to justify it with an excuse or two.

Regardless Windows is not rocket science, just that some people still want to be spoon fed.

At least Linux users embrace change and know how to use their brains unlike some Windows users IMHO.

Nobody moaned about 7.

And Linux has what to do with this thread... :|

7's change from Vista was negligible. 7 is 90% Vista, if I were to make up a number on the spot.

Vista is superior to XP, hands down. The hate was brought, and it was very disproportionate to the actual negatives against it. My anecdote is that after using Vista, I was never going back to XP.

Unrelated to my anecdote, People most definitely hate change for change's sake. To say otherwise is ignorant. You're not wrong that some change is embraced, but it doesn't prove my stance wrong at all.

In a way it does, I know a lot of Linux users that use Windows 8 without Start menu mod since some like myself use both Windows and Linux, also Linux has many different types of Start menus so they are more adaptable in general to change,as to Win7 I remember a few moaning about it in the early days but then its Windows and it would not be complete without somebody moaning about something.

Vista is a good example of HATE FUD,Win7 is so much like Vista ie layout etc yet Vista got a lot of unwarranted hate due to poor drivers support in early days by lazy companies and OEMs shipping PCs below minimum recommended Vista specs, basically all Win7 is a slightly faster version of Vista, again my point is they have to find something to moan about,if it's not Start menu its something else.

Win7 advantage over Vista was good driver support on release plus could use Vista drivers in general, two years refinement over Vista and OEMs learning from their mistakes by not shipping below minimum recommended specs, obviously by then we also had faster hardware ie PCs in general when Win7 was released.

I bet they gimp it somehow. I'm not giving up my startisback quite yet, the odds of Microsoft not effing this up are still quite small.

I don't care to be honest,it's not hard either way, maybe they will throw in a free spoon for those that need it .

I'm more curious on if they have any plans for a new type of Start menu(new design) for Win9 or 10 at some point down the road.

I'm ok for spoons, my old ones still work fine. Nobody changes the design of them for no good reason to a less functional design.

Hopefully if they do they'll actually do some market research first rather than just going "quick make it look different so people think we are still relevant".

As I stated earlier they can look at some Linux distros for some great Start menus, either way I can adapt to anything they throw out.

I do hope they phase out the old Start menu, two decades is enough and in that time it has remained the same virtually.

I would not say its less functional, different yes, fact is I found the old one limited in some ways to what I could pin on it etc..I'm ALL for new ideas with regards to Start menus, lets move forward and not backwards, however you can't please everyone.

8 was a new kind of start menu more or less I would have thought.
