Windows 8.1 Update fails due to inability to create RamDisk

I have 8GB of ram and just over 100GB of free space on my hard drive. Yet everytime I try to update to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, it fails.

The exact message I get in a blue "Recovery" screen is:

There isn't enough memory available to create a ramdisk device.

Error Code: 0cx0000017



Any ideas?

Ok, that sounds fine. Do you have a lot of programs running? Anything in Processes using a lot of RAM?

I literally added two 2GB sticks of ram last week bringing the system to 8. I just put them in there. System can detect them fine and all that seems normal.

As far as processes go, I'm not sure if that is related. Since this happens after the system initially reboots during install of 8.1. It throws the error up almost immediately after the BIOS screen.

Yes, since you didn't mention where you were in the first post, I assumed you were still in Windows.

Hmm, I'll have to think on this one. I suppose you have verified the board is detecting the 8 GB correctly.

Yes, sorry for not clarifying. Yes the board detects the ram perfectly. What if I just attempted to create the ramdisk myself?

I also tried using the install DVD to repair Windows but it fails. I wouldn't mind started fresh, but I cannot find my product key (digital upgrade from Windows 7). So I'm afraid of not being able to reinstall. Windows 8 is working perfectly for me otherwise. I just REALLY want the more controllable multi-window feature.

Nevermind, found the product key in the original order confirmation email from Microsoft. I guess I can try to refresh the Windows 8 install (sucks that I will have to reinstall all the non-metro apps by the sound of it), then update to 8.1.

Make sure all the win 8 updates are current.
