Windows 8.1, what backup are you using?

I'd like a more file based backup that runs on a schedule. I have directories like "inetpub" that don't reside in my User ones (Documents, Pictures, Music, etc) so get over looked if I don't do a system image.

I can do full backups and probably prefer them rather than incremental or differentials.

I am an advanced user so don't really need fancy wizards and the like.

Thanks

robocopy (comes with Vista and later). I don't care about taking a system image, it's only my files I care about. Since going to an SSD and HDD setup (SSD boot, HDD less needed data), I robocopy my user folder and then the remaining folders from the HDD (all to an external HDD).

I can share the scripts if people are interested.

I believe Robocopy is broken in Windows 8 and esp 8.1. I looked into that option and many had problems getting everything copied and/or false positives to modified files.

I use EaseUS Todo backup http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/screenshots.htm

I like to choose my own folders etc and also be able to make backup to my 256GB USB drive, it seems to work fine and is free for home users, works fine in Win8.1 .

It sucks that the system doesn't have a way to do encrypted Image backups. I guess i'll have to get a 3rd party program for it.

I use Acronis and image the drive but you can choose to only limit certain files/directories/partitions/whatever you want. You can encrypt it too.

Crashplan sounds like it would fit your needs if you are looking for a third party solution. I just use the built-in File History feature of Windows 8 to back up all of my important data to my unRAID server. By default it only backs up your user directories, but you can manually add any folder as well. I'm not sure why MS has not done a better job at explaining this feature. It works much like Time Machine for OSX, but actually supports any network location as a destination.

+3

I just do a full image every night (yes, it winds up being a 135GB file, for me anyway... ) and don't give it another thought.

I did have the chance to test my backup system... when my Samsung 840Pro died on me. Mounted the latest image on a new drive and I was back in business in 30 minutes.

I used to pick and choose files to backup, but after the system crash, I added the full backup as my main backup strategy, and just manually copy individual files as an extra measure.

Acronis True Image 2014 Premium and previous 7 versions. Never found any better over the years. Pretty fast now that I have USB 3 capability on some of my systems.
