Better than win7 under the hood. Classic shell sorts out all the issues for me, basically.
But yes, the start screen and full-screen apps is awful. Maybe the tiles could have a use if they were integrated into the desktop mode somehow.

Who thought fullscreen apps was a great idea on a desktop Maybe they have a use with multiple monitors..

Apple I guess as they had it first in 10.7 I think it was .

I am really in the metro start screen at all and dont use any of the metro apps so no big deal for me. The only metro bit I see is when I hit winkey+S for search

Metro = absolutely dire godawful UI

The rest of it, tolerable with classic start etc.

I'm getting along fine with it now but it no longer resembles what it did after first loading.

This past weekend I was at my dad's house and playing around with his Windows 8 computer (it's a touchscreen all-in-one - I think it's an HP). I updated it to 8.1 and, well, tried to use it, with no prior Windows 8 experience.

God did I hate it! I literally can see no benefit to the tablet interface on a PC - all it is, is annoying and counter-intuitive. I gather one can use a third-party application to make it work like Windows again, but why should the consumer have to do that? It's just ridiculous to me. In some ways Windows 8.1 annoys me even more than Windows 8, because it has that Start button that is in effect just an annoying tease.

Once I bypassed metro via Classic Shell it seems just like Windows 7 from a functional point of view, so there is no need to go back to Windows 7.

I used Classic Shell for a while, but prefer StartisBack now. Once you have a way of bypassing and ignoring the Metro side of Windows 8, its a fairly good operating system. Fast and stable for me.

Don't forget to change default programs for pictures, music, etc., or you'll get kicked back into Metro on a regular basis.

I'll probably skip all the 8.x versions and perhaps upgrade to 9 when it comes, assuming it has something to offer over W7. The whole 'tick-tock' thing.

I went kicking and screaming to W7 (from XP) in 2011... it was necessary and good... but it sure didn't seem like it at the time. I probably was more attached to XP because it rescued me from that God-awful Win ME...

The grouping of the start screen makes it much more useful than 8 but I still think the taskbar should be persistent for the desktop platform. It's evolving in the right direction.

Been using it for almost three months now. With Start8 1.3, I really can't tell any difference from 7. All my programs and customized icons migrated perfectly from 7. It is, in these circumstances, a better performer than 7. I had to label it to tell the difference. <vbg>

what is the point. and then.

In my specific case it improved BF4 performance significantly. I resisted for awhile and got Windows 7 stutter free, and I installed Windows 8.1 on a separate drive to prove in another Win 8.1 thread that there was no difference, and there was a big difference. Also, multi monitor support seems better. Independent desktop resolutions and task bars on both desktops. Otherwise, I dont notice any difference. Maybe someone who uses Windows more would care, but I use my PC as a glorified console/download machine.

Been using it for over 2 months now - did a direct upgrade from 7 to 8 to 8,1. Using Start8 ver. 1.3, I find no difference at all in running things. I don't even bother with layers like Metro, etc. Since it is on a multi-boot machine, I had to label it to tell the difference. <vbg>

Hmm, well, installing 8.1 on my Acer V5 122P subnotebook wasn't painful. It was smooth, just had to convert the Live account back to a local account after the install. And remove all the Metro apps it recopied back over to the Start Screen again.

Last night, I re-assembled my old parts into a working PC again, installed W8 Pro, updated, updated to 8.1. The process breaks completely after asking for your live account, where it asks for phone number or alternate email for security. No matter whether I entered a phone number, an email address, or click Skip Now, it simply reloads the same screen. After several attempts, I rebooted. Where it then stalled on 'Restoring Windows' for about 20 minutes.

Screw it, back to W8 Pro on this machine. I should install Mint, given that every time I try Windows 8, it vomits in my face. But the intended use for this machine will perform better under Windows.

Windows 7 market share still growing despite...

Windows 8 performance issues

- inability to turn off UAC without breaking half the OS functions

- inability to turn off hibernation without slowing down the shutdown process (it is a vital part of shut down)
Only slowing it down to win 7 speeds.

- crappy Wireless connection management
Very similar to win 7
- bad performance when connected to secondary screen (TV or monitor)

- slower internet
Not to me, maybe a pebkac issue

Personally, I'm not a fan of the App screen and desktop mode. It's like they built two different OSes into it and they aren't integrated really well. You really need one or the other (although I try to only use desktop mode)

Does the term anecdotal evidence mean anything to you?
Anecdotal evidence has several definitions, which usually relate to how certain types of evidence cannot be used to logically conclude something. We see examples of this type of evidence all the time in commercials. A person tells us how their breath feels fresher after using a certain brand of toothpaste, or people testify to the clearing of their acne as a result of special products. Anecdotal evidence is often used in place of clinical or scientific evidence, and may completely ignore research or harder evidence that points to an opposite conclusion.
