Why didn't I think of this before? And why hasn't windows thought of this too?

THINK ABOUT IT DUDES!

In Windows 7, when you when you click on the start button, MOST of the time, you run stuff off the Recent list.

They need to have the option in metro start to store Recent programs as well! Most of the time, it's a handful of apps that one runs anyways!

Yep. I set my start menu to display 12 recent programs and I use it a LOT. That feature is now GONE in Windows 8.

that's how I used the start menu in Windows 7. I don't like clutter on my task bar so the most used, most recent and a couple of pinned programs were on there.

Now it takes me several seconds to go into metro Start and find Photoshop, or the calculator, or notepad.

One fix I was hoping for is the WinSxS file size. I have used W8 sparingly for a couple of weeks now - fresh install - and WinSxS is already at 6 GB

Well, I just dragged the ones I use to where I want them to be. It takes me more than a few seconds to manage my way through the normal start menu to find something.

However, having the second column be most used/recently used would be an interesting change. Then you could put what you want in the first column, then what you use alot shifts to the left.

I installed the preview on an HP Probook 4430s and no wifi isnt working. Ethernet is fine and the only connections that show are wired and bluetooth. I am guessing it thinks the wifi is a bluetooth connection.

As much as I hate Metro, I have another beef with Windows 8, this one doesn't make any difference. But I absolutely hate the fish on the boot screen.

yeah...good luck. It's hard to imagine an OS having a "back to factory" reset button and not having a large file somewhere to aid in that

You need to install the drivers. Either hook your computer up via ethernet and run windows update or download the drivers on another computer and transfer with a usb stick

I tried to like win8, I took a week to accept it and let it sink in.But I hated everything about windows 8 except the task manager.

It feels like a rebadge of win7 gone bad.

I formatted the drive and assigned it to storing my games.

I wonder how many of these UI issues are going to be fixed by the time Windows 8 ships?

Something tells me that this product launch isn't going to be successful if they don't make some serious tweaks. It will be like Windows Vista all over again.

Is there no way they can reduce that file? My W7 winsxs is almost at 11GB's - kind of expensive real estate if you are using an SSD for your OS.

I like it.

I think it's getting a lot of negative feedback simply based on people not liking change.

I had this on my work pc for a few weeks but I got rid of it in the end. I just dislike it.

I get the impression that MS simply doesn't know how to create a touch based OS and so thought "Hey Windows 7 is popular, let's tack on a touch UI over the top of it".

I'm expecting something far, far worse. We saw how irate people got over finding Vista was incompatible with their printers and such. I can only imagine the blowback after firing up Win8 for the first time and and finding it's incompatible with you.

The driver situation with Vista was terrible. I'm sure after that debacle it probably won't happen again

Haven't been keeping up with this release, but am considering getting a new computer. So possibly a new Windows. Can anyone tell me whether this Metro crap is optional? Can I revert to a user interface for grownups?

No one knows. Probably not, but if there is enough public outcry with the beta maybe they will change their mind.

Will it become optional for release though? Any decisions made on that?

I doubt it, it's going to be hard for Microsoft to get developers to write native metro apps if everyone just turns it off. Then again it's going to also be hard if everyone skips this upgrade to windows as well.
I think they might have bitten off more than they can chew in making a unified OS for desktops and tablets.

I was hoping against hope that back on April 1st Microsoft would have revealed W8 was really one of the most elaborate April Fools Day jokes in history. "Gotcha! You didn't really think we'd gone that crazy, did you?!"

No such luck.
