Well, I'll either deal with it for another week and just pick up the retail edition, or go back to Windows 7. Not sure which yet. But I am tired of not being able to reliably use my desktop.
Does anyone know if I buy the upgrade if it is tied to the system you purchase it from? Also, can the upgrade be used as a full install or do I need to spend the $30 extra for that?

OEM licenses are the only ones tied to the motherboard on which they're installed. Upgrades are transferable as long as the license from which you're upgrading is also transferred.
I don't know if you can do a clean install with the upgrade yet since I don't think it's technically available yet. But I could be wrong on that.

Well I am asking to see if there is a way that I can avoid having to re-install Windows 7 just so I can upgrade straight to Windows 8 (I don't use Metro, but I prefer the look and feel of 8 over 7 assuming that this problem goes away).

You can do a clean install via the online upgrade either with USB or burning an ISO, what I can't say is how Microsoft vets you for upgradability. I remember Paul Thurrott had an article on upgrading from the Release Preview on winsupersite.com
