I'm really tempted to give it a try on my HTPC as well. Though I'm reluctant to find out if it breaks any of my codecs as well lol; took me a little while to get everything right on W7 (and it still isn't quite ><)

Good to hear that MS is giving away the Windows Media Center for free until January, if you get the pro version of windows for $39.

Is the Windows Media Center also downloadable as a file you can archive?

I am curious if it's like a windows update you have to stream/download using a live internet connection, or if it's a download you can save to your computer/USB stick and re-install at some later date etc.

I noticed you have to forfeit your windows 7 key once you upgrade though. I have a Win 7 ultimate and hate to do that.

I don't know why you would have to "give up" your windows 7 key. They clearly state on the page that you don't even have to use this upgrade on the same computer:

While the offer will be limited to eligible customers who purchase a qualified PC, the upgrade may be installed on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying operating system (see Windows 8 System Requirements). Customers should visit their PC manufacturer’s website for more information about how to upgrade their PC to Windows 8, including updated software and drivers.

If you are using xp as the upgraded from os you would need to retire usage of that os. It seems that you can clean install but you may need to install your xp on that computer first.

I havent gotten to 32/64 yet (if your computer can do 64 I would be ok with it choosing automatically as I cant really think of a downside.) CD key is given to you on the receipt and also emailed to you.

Isn't the vista key on the bottom of the laptop? If the laptop came with vista installed, the OEM label has to be there.

Yes, but you can't do this using Upgrade Assistant. If your PC has a 64-bit capable processor (CPU) but is currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can install a 64-bit version of Windows 8, but you'll need to buy Windows 8 as a DVD.

So apparently if you run the Upgrade Assistant with a 32bit system, it'll only give you that version, and same for 64bit.

If you look at the FAQ from windowsupgradeoffer, they say

Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another PC?
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased from June 2nd, 2012 through January 31, 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

So I am thinking the same will apply.
I think only COA keys are the ones where you will 'lose' it, since that is tied to the specific OEM who made the machine.

running 8 pro on my work laptop right now. it's different. I can completely see this on a tablet and a phone, it's still a little odd on a laptop. it feels like some of it is identical to 7, and then parts are replaced with the tiles. will take some getting used to

lol yea it is there. just got home to check. if i don't like 8 on the laptop, how do I go back to vista if I don't have the cd? (mother in law gave my wife the laptop and has no clue where the disc is)

DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID.

I forgot about the fact that my desktop has a 32bit version of Vista. I ran the upgrade assistant from my desktop, and accidentally bought the 32 bit version of Windows 8.

After reading the page more thoroughly, they said this. You can't use the digital upgrade offer to go from a 32bit Windows (Vista or XP) to a 64bit Windows 8.
