Yeah its looking for a previous version. To install you will need to burn the image or put it on a usb and boot from it. You can't upgrade a different computer if you used the app to download the software on your pc

Did you already install that key on another computer ? I installed on a new hard drive and did not get any key verifications error. Is this during the install ? Or after the install ?

You need to wipe that hard drive if your booting from the USB. Maybe I'm confused about what you are doing. But all I did was create a USB stick with my downloaded ISO, popped in a new hard drive, I was asked for a key , I put my key in , it installed but I had to do the rearming trick to activate since it was a new hd.

what's the size of the full 64 bit iso? i just downloaded the 'keep nothing' iso from MS and it came out to about 2.8 gigs, well short of the release candidate's size of 3.5 gigs.

Install HashTab and do a sha1 and then search Google to see if it matches.

brand new unused key
downloaded windows 8 files using the installer program on my own computer
used installer program to create ISO file
burned ISO to dvd
swapped laptop's hard drive to what should be a brand new drive (bought from fry's in retail packaging, still in factory bag)
booted from dvd on the laptop
hit next a couple times for language/etc.
typed in key from windows 8 purchase email
it says key unable to be verified and won't let me install

Wow that is strange. I wonder if they changed the ISO files since I downloaded. I did the same thing and it let me install. What It would not do was let me activate because it thought I did an upgrade not a clean install. My guess is the DVD got messed up burning. Do you have a flash drive to create a boot disc on that and try ?

crazy, it worked from a flash drive even though if you create a flash drive and hit 'what next' it takes you here:
Boot from the media you created to install on another partition

To install Windows 8 on another partition, there must be a version of Windows already running in the partition.

no idea why it wouldn't work from either the iso i burned or the official dvd

reading the license agreement it looks like you can transfer these licenses as much as you want to your own hardware. thought they were limited to the original machine.

The official DVD had its own serial. The one you made I'm betting the DVD was not burned slow enough. Something probably got corrupted for example the verification section of the key.

I don't bother with DVDs anymore as flash drives are faster anyway. Now to activate it follow the posts back a few pages for the registry trick.

Damn you all now I'll probably buy this. Could someone explain the record from cable box feature? Sounds too good to be true, any special box or does it work with fios? I really have trouble believing this can be done without paying extra.

Are you asking about the Windows Media Center features, to use a windows computer as a DVR recorder to record cable shows like a Tivo? There are probably a few Win 7 guides for doing this, as my understanding is that Windows 8 uses the very same media center as Win 7 so you don't gain anything by going to win 8?

.....vista......
I'm starting to think it's worth it for the faster start up time & better networking/security of professional. Media center recording definitely puts me over the top for it.

Ah I can't remember what Windows Media Center was like for Vista, but I really enjoy using Windows Media Center in Windows 7 and Windows 8. I mean, when you digitize your DVD collection, and see all the cover art you can browse through easily and still play the DVD with all the menus and everything, it's very cool and slick how they do it in Windows Media Center.

My first install also failed when unpacking the files, I think because the download became corrupted. I ended up just using a different computer to re-create the USB drive and then the install went fine; the first time I downloaded the installation files it gave me some message that the download had been interrupted and that some 'retry limit' had been reached (something like that) but I just resumed it. In retrospect probably should have just deleted the partial files and then done it.

tldr: if you have install problems, try a different media/recreating the media

Microsoft to raise Windows 8 upgrade prices by 5X

Microsoft on Friday announced Windows 8 upgrade price increases of as much as 400% that will take effect Feb. 1, when a three-month promotional discount ends.

The current $39.99 deal for a Windows 8 Pro upgrade expires in less than two weeks, on Jan. 31. At that point, higher prices similar or identical to those for Windows 7 will move into place, Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc confirmed Friday.

An upgrade from XP, Vista or Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro will cost $199.99 starting Feb. 1, LeBlanc said, a five-fold increase. The Windows 8 Pro Pack, which upgrades a copy of Windows 8 -- the edition installed on most consumer PCs -- to the more capable Windows 8 Pro, will run $99.99, a 43% jump from the promotional price of $69.99.

Microsoft will also add a new SKU to the mix that upgrades XP, Vista or Windows 7 to Windows 8, not the Pro edition. The price: $119.99.

The Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro upgrade prices are identical to the suggested list prices for Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional upgrades, but the Pro Pack's $99.99 is 11% higher than what Microsoft charged for the "Anytime Upgrade" from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

The prices were not surprising, as numerous retailers had long cited the after-discount costs for Windows 8 Pro and Pro Pack. The only real news was the availability of a Windows 8 upgrade, something that Microsoft had previously declined to confirm.

LeBlanc also noted that download and boxed copy prices were the same, a pricing practice Microsoft has used before.

Although Microsoft was applauded last summer when it unveiled the $39.99 Windows 8 Pro upgrade, Friday's final price tag revelations show that Microsoft has little interest in mimicking Apple. Last year, Apple sold OS X 10.8, aka Mountain Lion, for $19.99. In 2011, Apple charged $29.99 for Lion.

Last summer, when Microsoft revealed the Windows 8 Pro discount, Stephen Baker, an analyst with the NPD Group, pointed out that it wasn't in the Redmond, Wash. company's interest to dramatically drop the price. Microsoft's goal, said Baker, was to sell new PCs, not get customers to upgrade old ones.

"It behooves Microsoft to get people to move to new hardware, so they're not going to make an upgrade extraordinarily cheap," Baker argued then. "This [upgrade cycle] is even more about hardware. Microsoft wants people to get off XP and into the new different types of hardware."

While customers have until the end of the month to take advantage of the Windows 8 Pro and Pro Pack discounts, other deadlines have already come and gone: The Windows 8 previews expired Tuesday, Jan. 15. Since then, the free previews have automatically restarted every one or two hours, and on-screen messages have told users that they must upgrade to a paid license.

More information on Windows 8's upgrade paths can be found on Microsoft's

Technet site for details... I won't but it anyway...

Chances are people won't upgrade when it's even more costly.

Most people who are going to upgrade already have or have at least already purchased the license I'd think; even people who don't keep up with the industry can probably tell $40 for Windows is a bargain.

If the increase is true (I think it'll increase in price, I'm not sure if it's really going to go up 4-5x) then if nothing else I think it'll get people off the fence by pushing them away or enticing them to get in now, which is valuable to Microsoft. They're "long" on Windows so they realize early adopters are important for growing the brand and mindshare, so they want to attract as many of them as they can. Then they can sit on retail sales and bulk licensing for years to come.

I keep getting an internal error when it starts checking apps/devices. It says "check logs for details" but I have no idea what logs are being made, and where.

I'll take it as a sign that I shouldn't waste my money.

Have you tried removing the windows updater and downloading a new one ? Wipe browser cache?

As was already mentioned, I wouldnt burn any 8 DVD at more than 4X (takes about 11 min)
The burners just cant handle the gigantic folders constant data stream, USB can easily.
I use latest Ultra Iso for burning O/S - nothing else, not even MS.
And good quality DVD - Verbatim 16X MIT (made in Taiwan) not MII (made in India) or MIC (you know where)
(Have had success @ 8X with BRD - more lasers)
