Hi,

I am trying Windows 8 again. I'm using the 90 day evaluation of the Enterprise version, and I have some questions.

1. If I access the internet explorer tile, Once ie opens there is not a menu and no way to go back to the metro tiles other than pressing the windows key. I know that win 8 is said to have two different version of ie9, but what is the point of the IE tile if there is no menu, toolbar, favorites etc What am I missing?

2. On the video tile, I set up folders/drive that my videos are located. I am able to chose a video, but I seem to unable to go back to the folder to view another video. If I go back to the metro and then back to the video tile, it start the video from where I earlier left it. I download the klite video pack and was hoping that media player classic would show the video but it doesn't.

3. How do I access my programs when I am on the desktop? I just loaded office 2010 and the tiles are there, but when I go to the desktop tile, I seem unable to do much of anything.

I have been vocal about win 8 being a mistake, but I will admit that I like it more now than ever. Right now, it makes me feel like an idiot I've used a computer since the early 80's and I'm asking how do I access my programs.

Please clear up these questions for me, and I am sure I will soon have more. But to be honest I am trying my best to like this. before I unveil this to the other 8 people living here in my house I need to know how to use it.

p.s. Even now, I am using the ie9 tile to access this forum. I am done with this post, but I am unable to access an address bar or anything else on ie9. I am only able to exit this page by pressing the win key. When I enter this ie9 tile again I am right back here Is there some simple answer that I am missing or am I stuck on the page and the links it provides forever?
The ie9 on the desktop acts as I expect it to, but this ie9 tile version, what am I missing?

Right click a blank part of the page. If you hit the "+" button in the top right, you get a new tab interface with frequent and favorites.

To get back to the Start tiles, put the mouse in the lower-left corner of the screen and a Start icon should appear, click on that. If you have multiple programs running and want to switch, then press your face firmly against the keyboard and roll it back and forth---NO WAIT, that's under Troubleshooting :whiste: Use the upper-right corner and it should peek you the other programs.

I'm in the same boat, the GUI is needlessly complicated for a desktop user. They have a nice OS under there, but the new schizo GUI is spoiling the experience for me. If I get Win8, it's a safe bet I'll be hacking it into as close a replica of classic Windows as practical, with my own hodge-podge Start menu on the Desktop.

Tangentially, IE10 on the Desktop can be set for the same heightened security as the tile-based IE10. Enable Enhanced Protected Mode in the Internet Options > Advanced panel. While you're at it, enable Protected Mode on the Intranet and Trusted Sites zones in the Security tab, and set their sliders to Medium-High so they're as secure as the Internet Zone. Moar info on IE10 Enhanced Protected Mode: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals...rk-security-addons-cookies-metro-desktop.aspx

1. Right click brings up a lot of contextual stuff. Menus, tools, etc.

2. I don't have an install of Windows 8 near me but I would imagine right-click would once again bring up options.

3. Use the start screen like you would a start menu. Hit the Windows key on your keyboard and begin a search or look for the program you want to use.

I'd recommend dragging any shortcuts you use often to the classic desktop.

Also I read that you can create a programs folder and pin it to the taskbar, and then customize it with your most used program shortcuts. That could also work well.

This thread is good enough for me to ask this question.

How do I install Silverlight on Windows 8? :l

can you not go to the silverlight website using IE in desktop mode and install from there? I thought that's how you'd do that...

Funny, in my 90 day trial of Win 8 Enterprise, Silverlight was offered as an optional update in my Windows Update Program and I installed it from there.

I would guess the website, not Silverlight's installer, was what reported an unsupported OS. If I try to get it, FI, I get redirected to Moonlight.

1. I hope you are not using IE through metro? Why would you?

2. Ok, yes you are using metro. I recommend stopping using it and use desktop (if you are on a PC)

3. By going to the desktop mode.

Seriously I'm tired of all the criticism of win8 when it's the same as win7 only with optional Metro UI. I love win8 and I don't even have an opinion about Metro, simply because I'm not using it (except for search, but that's just very neat!)

Well, I reinstalled Windows 8 due to partitioning errors, and Silverlight installed perfectly fine.

Hey guys,

It just came to a point where I`ll need to do a fresh install of Windows on my pc... Now I know W8 ain`t officially "there" but I happen to have a MSDN licencse for it and with that I`m thinking of switching over... Don`t wanna start flame-ish talk and I also know all about what W8 brings (khm ... metro... khm) to the table...

What I wanna ask you guys is hows everything working so far?
Been mostly reading about the new features and stuff but how is everything driver wise atm? Is software like skype already compatible? And how is backwards compatibility? Heard there are some issues there...

Win8 has some noteworthy security advances over Win7. Regarding IE, the Metro version runs in Enhanced Protected Mode, the desktop version doesn't (by default). If you'd like EPM on the Desktop version of IE10, you go to Internet Options > Advanced tab and there's a checkbox to enable it. However, EPM puts each tab in an AppContainer and isn't compatible with most add-ons. More info on the subject: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals...rk-security-addons-cookies-metro-desktop.aspx

I would even say its a more lightweight/faster browser than even chrome.... I use it on my desktop and is actually really good.

I used it because it is there in the metro tiles. I thought I was suppoused to use it.

2. Ok, yes you are using metro. I recommend stopping using it and use desktop (if you are on a PC)

Why is it there for? Really what is its purpose. I installed the classic shell to make windows 8 look like windows 7 on the desktop. I uninstalled it for I want to learn how to use it.

3. By going to the desktop mode.
But when I go to desktop mode it seems useless except for being able to use the useable version of ie.

When I am in desktop mode, I just want to be able to access my installed program. I understand now that I should drag my metro program tiles to my desktop.

Believe it or not, I'm not trying to bash windows 8, I'm just trying to understand it. In all fairness it is not just like win 7. In window 7 when I install a program an inco is put on my desktop, In windows 7 if I open ie, I can easily exit it or go to favorites.

I want to like windows 8 and become fluent ni it. From what I have read it has very significant security improvments over windows 7. It seems to be sleek and streamlined. BUt when I go to the video tile in metro, I have to try and figure out how to exit a video, change to another video, look at a video that is not maximized.

After using computers since the early 80's I should not have this many basic questions, perhaps I'm just an idiot, but I'm thinking I am not all of the problem.
