Or, one could say it's more efficient because you're using the keyboard more and the mouse less. As Gooberlx2 implied, using hotkeys has always been the most efficient way, moving one hand back and forth between the keyboard and mouse is not efficient.
This is the only plus I've found on the "ribbon" for Office 2010 vs. my old office 2003 at work.
I keep 2003 on my computer so when I can't find what I'm looking for after a couple minutes of browsing through the ribbon, I can open 2003, learn the <ctrl> or <alt> keyboard shortcut for it, and just do that in 2010.
It has inadvertently increased productivity by frustrating the crap out of me and forcing me to learn keyboard shortcuts I wasn't using before.
Win 8 may do the same thing... however, I noticed some of this type of functionality has been removed that existed in previous versions. For example, to set up printers in Vista / 7 you could hit the win-key and type 'PRINTER'. In Win8, that doesn't work, you are forced to mouse through the control panel interface =/... It's those bonehead type moves that are really going to alienate the desktop users on Win8. We can learn a new interface, keyboard shortcuts, etc... but this kind of thing is a clear step backwards in usability and intuitiveness.
