Windows 8 was simply created to sell more copies of windows 7.

Last I checked, there is no Start Menu in a Linux distro.

Then it's time you checked again. It may not literally say "Start", but there's plenty of DEs that include a start/programs menu even if Gnome doesn't any longer.

For the many of us on here that are technicians as a trade, Windows 8 could be just what we needed financially.

I can already see folks buying their shiny new computer or laptop with Windows 8 on it, taking it home, and after about a week throwing their hands up in the air.

Then, just like what Vista did for us, they'll pay me to format their hard drive and install a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

No, you could disable int Vista too but people are too lazy to figure out how to do it and would rather just bitch and moan.

They toned down UAC in Windows 7. It was too aggressive in Windows Vista.

Windows 8 falls further behind Windows 7 in pre-launch stats

Users four times less likely to try Windows 8 than they did its predecessor in '09

Pretty sure that's because Windows Vista was viewed as "bad" more than what Windows 8 is. Besides, there is no point to using Windows 8 until the app store is filled with a ton of apps. Otherwise, it literally is Windows 7 to most people.

Yup. It's going to be the same thing.

It's funny too, because the level of denial is pretty much exactly as I remember it with Vista. Denial that anything could possibly be wrong, and critics just won't give poor, poor Microsoft the break they automatically deserve. (And really, Vista, at it's worst, even at launch was far better design-wise than Metro is.)

A couple months later and I can't even count how many of my friends, co-workers and family were coming to me desperate to get "...THIS P.O.S!!" off their computers and an OS installed that actually worked right. In the real world, most people don't revolve themselves around being apologists for "poor, poor" multi-billion dollar corporations, they just want to be able to do their work on the computer they bought without crap (terrible OS ideas, spyware, viruses, etc.) getting in their way.

Dell and others charged as much as $150 to 'downgrade' to XP, and did good business at it! But somehow, everyone just imagined the new OS was pure crap. Just like now. Heh.

they are not conflicting ..

the article I posted had a percentage,
while the article you posted had values (they said double values).

and the total number of computers in the last 3 years has increased, which is normal.

although .. there are not actual figures in both articles, so both articles are questionable.

i guess this could happen:
the number of sold windows 8 might be higher of that of windows vista, but would be with a smaller market share.

But you have to remember- this IS the same company, with many of the same people, that thought the Kin was a great idea. That think Windows Phone is a serious contender against Android and iOS. That thought BoB was a good idea. That came out with ME and Vista.
You have to be trolling. With the exception of BoB and ME, every single thing you posted were excellent products.

Kin = Absolutely fantastic device held back by horrid Verizon Wireless data pricing.

Windows Phone = As an iOS user, I can honestly say Windows Phone is brilliant. The only thing holding it back is developer support which is holding back user adoption...which is holding back developer support.

Vista was also an excellent OS. 7 is only Vista with a new taskbar.

I love my Windows Phone...but it is my first smart phone. I do have an android tablet, and I can't imagine fumbling around with that OS on a phone.

Not a big fan or Win8, but I'm a desktop user. On a tablet, I think it will compete very well with apple and the higher end android tablets. That said, I'll stick with 7 as long as it is practical on my PC.

Win 8 would be alot better if it defaulted to the desktop when booting on a PC and defaulted to the metro screen on touch devices.

Having used metro on a phone I appreciated its touch controls I think its a good step forward. But trying to operate those same interface mechanics through a mouse is not intuitive, its slower, confusing and often very frustrating.

You know you can boot straight to the desktop in Windows 8 right?

I think windows 8 is not as bad as windows vista, I actually think vista was fine, ..
windows 8 is like windows ME ..

Amazing article, found it while looking for a way to bring the start menu back.
It is focusing on the new start screen:

This video shows the reaction of the average user's first impression when he goes and buy a pc that has windows 8:

Guy: now, who put this out ?
Tech Guy: Microsoft
Guy: they are trying to drive me to mac ?

Quotes from the article:

Microsoft is abandoning the most thriving computing market and rushing into the den of rabid wolves called the mobile market, where it expects to garner some extra points. It will be fighting against ARM champions, almost all exclusively running Linux. Does this sound like a good decision? Let me elaborate a little more. Would you sacrifice your entire user base in a rich and profitable tier for the sake of a feeble chance that you might hold a small share of a new market segment that has significantly lower profit margins? Sounds like stupidity to me.

OK, let me be blunt. No one is going to write their business PowerPoint presentations on a smartphone. No one is going to design a new car on a tablet. No one will run protein folding on their smartphone. No one will play ArmA II on a smartphone. No one will use those little bricks of plastic diarrhea for anything more than updating the status of their miserable existence on some social network.

It's not the Start Menu. It's irrelevant. Start Menu can be replaced with any number of similar ideas. That's hardly the issue. The fact your entire screen must flip over for simple things like search, control panel or anything alike is the issue here. This is inefficient. This is slow. This is counterproductive. This is counterintuitive. This is stupid.

I doubt that will happen that way.

If people didn't like win8 enough to the level of accepting an older operating system, then why not just keep using xp or vista.
XP is the old equivilent of 7
Vista is teh old equivilent of 8
XP rocks and i would use it if it had a 64-bit version that didnt suck and was still programmed for.

I still use xp as of now. Thinking about switching to 7 but I don't see a reason why.

What? You don't need to go to metro to access control panel. Right click where the start button used to be and a menu pops up with all the admin tools and options.

People b***h and moan for the sake of b****ing and moaning without actually spending more than 2 hours with the OS.

Bingo! And 8 is 7 with an, ummmm, odd interface; I never had a problem with Vista, and all the whining about it sounded just like what we're hearing now. I found working with the Preview for a couple of hours enjoyable, but doubt I will ever use the Metro desktop. The thing that was most notable for me was how quick it was on an old 7200 RPM spinner I installed it on. True, it was a fresh install, but some tasks executed as quickly as many do on my Win7 install with an SSD. Go figure...
